NHS prescription for wheat/gluten allergy (not coeliac)

Hi there,

I wondered whether there is anyone who receives food basics on prescription for a wheat/gluten free allergy?

The reason I ask is because when my daughter was diagnosed recently the hospital said she would receive prescription from GP but I discussed this with the GP today who (rather rudely) told me she wasnt going to get any handouts from them as she isnt coeliac.

Im not trying to diddle the local PCT out of thousands, I simply need (not want) a little assistance in buying her basic food (a loaf of gf bread 1/2 size of standard loaf costs twice as much!) the hospital seemed so confidant that she would receive prescription, so who is in the wrong??

Hi I get prescription for my daughter who has a wheat and gluten allergy (she is not coeliac) It is down to the doctor but the dietician recommended it

feynman · 28/02/2011 23:57

I also get wheat free prescriptions from the gp for my sons wheat allergy, but they have told me that I only get it because the hospital dietician requested it. I got the impression they would not have given it without. We get bread, flour and pasta.
Can you go back to whoever you saw at the hospital and ask them to do the presciption or write to your GP's- I don't think they can refuse of the hospital requests it.

All prescriptions are being cut in most areas so coeliacs won't be getting them for much longer anyway.
Through trial and error and recommendations you will find products that will suit your dd, I can recommend the doves farm self raising flour and the plain, just use it as normal for cakes etc

RantyMcRantpants · 01/03/2011 00:32

I'm getting Genius bread on prescription for my GI son.

Definatly recommend doves Farm products. I have a panasonic breadmaker and use their bread flour on the gluten function and get reasonable bread.

Also use tesco free from pasta, Mesa sunrise flakes for breakfast. Black Farmer sausages. I cook and bake from scratch and don't find it to much of a problem.

I have a good book I use for baking, will put up the details tomorrow.

The book is called The Gluten Free Cookbook For Kids by Adriana Rabinovich.

Hi All
I realize this post is quite old, but just wanted to say that my DS has several allergies gluten, dairy & egg amongst others! We get bread on prescription but choose to buy pasta, flour etc.. We were refered by our dietician also!

Have loads of food suggestions for anyone who wants them! M&S sausages are nearly all gluten free!!!! and delicious!

mum2twoloudbabies · 20/07/2011 08:44

pitstop please please please put your suggestions up. I am weaning an 8mo who is allergic to wheat, dairy, egg, soya and peanut and I am fast running out of ideas!

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to add that we get bread, pasta and digestive biscuits on prescription for my DS2 but it was a bit of a fight and the dietician had to write to the GP insisting that it was necessary. My DD1 is coeliac and I do find it odd that she can get all sorts on prescription yet my DS who's allergic to milk, wheat, egg and nuts isn't entitled to anything even though he's far harder to cater for and any mistakes could be fatal (unlike coeliacs). I really think the NICE guidelines need to be reviewed on this issue. Mind you, I've heard that some health boards are even restricting coeliacs' prescriptions now due to budget cuts so maybe we won't get anything at all in the future...

pitstop · 20/07/2011 21:00

I was completely of that mind re coeliac vs allergy on the prescription front! had to get my dietician to point out that our options were even more limited due to my DSs other allergies! also cannot believe how expensive gluten free food is, feel like we should be entitled to some kind of allowance!! hoping for too much I know.

M22loudbabies,
My Ds is allergic to Gluten, wheat, rye, dairy, egg & sesame but ok with Soya. We have found M&S to be a good source of really nice food, not just "allergy" food. We recently discovered their really lovely GF breaded chicken. Their sausages are great as well.

We buy quite a few Orgran products- they do good pancake mixes, bread crumbs, egg replacer, oh and little kids biscuits called outback animals.

Tesco and Sainsburys do free from fish fingers, but we do an awful lot of label reading!!! we get stupidly excited by very small things, for example discovering heinz baked beans with mini sausages were DS friendly!

We get Dietary special bread on prescription and energy rolls and seem to shop at a ridiculous number of different shops! I could go on! if there's anything specific please ask! my DS is 4 now so I've had time to learn!

Hi FutureMrsButler ,sometimes Coeliac Disease is called wheat allergy or gluten allergy (even though it is an auto-immune condition, not an allergy).

Did your daughter have her diagnosis after an NHS gastroscopy & biopsy?

If so, she may be a coeliac, in which case she is eligible for prescription gluten free basic foods.

Coeliac Disease is not rare (1 in 100 people have it) so your daughter could have CD.

If she is a coeliac all her blood relatives should be tested for it, too as it runs in families.
