Seem to have narrowed down ds' allergy, but it doesn't seem believable!

A few times ds has had rashes. Yesterday he broke out in hives on his trunk, then face, wheezed and swelled a little. The only new ingredient was pumpkin, it just seems so unlikely! Other than that he's only had tomatoes a few times, so a sort of possibility.

A friend's little boy was allergic to tomato at one point. And my cousins are allergic to a lot of things, including carrots! so i think anything's possible.

Luckily piriton sorted him quickly, gave it in minutes. Just frustrating wondering what and why. It seems no allergy appears on first go but builds up (he had formula for 4 days before showing allergy, had soya for 5 weeks before symptoms). Just as I think something ok I see a tiny rash, which after a few more tastes devlops into diarhhea, hives, wheezing etc. Making food diaries hell.

Try to get to see a proper allergy specialist!

A mother died a couple of years ago from her tomato allergy (she was making bolognese sauce for her family). I had a cousin who was allergic to strawberries. However my son has a reaction to something (I think it is a plant), but we've never been able to find out exactly what, but it leads to an all over rash.

Allergies do often build up. Do try and get to see a proper consultant.

I guess its possible, I've heard the first time someone has an allergen the body builds up a defence, the 2nd recognises it as a 'threat' iyswim and then the reactions can get worse.

My DS has only developed allergies in the past year or so, so he must have been exposed to most of these things for 4/5 yrs before reacting.

He has only just started the wheezing, swelling in face.

"When one thinks of food allergies pumpkin seldom comes to mind. However, allergy to pumpkin pulp and pumpkin seed has been proved through allergy testing.

The symptoms of pumpkin allergy are oral allergy syndrome, angioedema, itching, shortness of breath, and asthma. Those allergic to pumpkin may also be allergic to other cucurbitaceae family members including cucumber, zucchini, muskmelon, and watermelon."

Just got this off a website, HTH.

mumbar- So it's not so way out it's unbelievable.

I have an appointment with allergy dietician so will ask her about testing (end of March).

GP/ A&E always say each time he has rash/ sickness/ wheezing that it's viral. Believed them until I noticed piriton got rid of it and it was caused by certain things, 'virus' disappeared without dairy (as did eczema). Now instead of days of unresponsiveness. rash and vomtiing (and a few times dehydration) piriton heads in off in 20min.

I know how you feel, allergy tests so far have shown nothing up for DS, but when he has facial flushing, and hives which only go on face etc puriton and its gone in 20 minutes. Hes also has a reaction with swollen face, flushing, swollen lips and wheezing. We actually have epi-pens despite allergens being unknown and tests negative.

When DS had the bad reaction I thought immediatly - a cold- except lets be realistic they don't come on in 2 minutes ad go in 1 1/2 after lots of AH.

It does say OAS (oral allergy syndrome) which from what little I know is related to lots of raw fruit and veg, but fine when cooked. Its also related to some pollens (birch I think?) so if your DC has hayfever symptoms it would make sense.

And no its not unbelievable - sadly it appears you can be allergic to anything. Sad

dp is allergic to chicken. it's most inconvenient Wink

So could easily be pumpkin or tomato

strawberrycake · 23/02/2011 20:17

Well luckily he's mainly eaten furniture today so seems fine Grin

Nursery gave him about 5 foods today he's never had before, and no piriton! I go through weeks where every other day I get a phonecall at work to ask if they can give piriton/ inhaler.

My partner is allergic to kiwi, bananas and fish, but not shellfish. in the past he's shown responses to potato, tomato and citrus in patch tests, although he eats them with no strong reaction now but as he has severe eczema and asthma anyway, maybe he doesn't notice additional reaction. allergies can change through your life - medical understanding of this is developing all the time. i've just had an allergic response to the mercury fillings i've had for 18 years - bizarre Confused, thankfully totally cleared up after i had them replaced.

strawberrycake · 23/02/2011 20:22

I had an allergic reaction after a chinese recently, aside from (mild) hayfever I've never had any reaction. I woke up feeling like I couldn't open my eyes as was so sleepy. DH nudged me awake to tell me my lips/ eyes were huge. Raided DS' piriton and it went down, and that was the end of it.

OP posts:
mumbar · 23/02/2011 20:38

Yes, DS reacted to Chinese once, hasn't since though. Hmm

eragon · 25/02/2011 23:51

my last sons reactions have been put down to pumpkin seeds, and he is going for testing in the summer.
seeds are a well known allergy, and i have heard of others being allergic to them.

strawberrycake · 26/02/2011 08:15

Very interesting eragon, thank you for sharing that.
