DS normally has the 'free from' porridge from Sainsburys, but we have run out To save me making a trip to our nearest Sainsburys (20+ miles each way!), how do I make the porridge up? I don't have a box to check the ingredients, but I'm sure it was just rice and millet flakes. Our local health food shop has these. Do I add equal quanities of each?

Any advice gratefully received!

is he allergic to oats?

dont have a porridge recipe for these cereals but I made up my own this weekend with maizeflour with a recipe I found on the net. I used 1 portion of cereal to 4 portions of hot water and cooked on a medium heat for 5 mins. You can try it out with rice or millet.

well porridge with outs is 1 oats to 2 milk/water.
Maybe its the same? what is the allergy to?

it depends I suppose on how thick you want the porridge. i was making mine thin enough for 1st stage weaning.

He is intolerant to gluten. Even quarter of an oatcake is too much for him, so he can't have normal porridge.

Loves the Sainsburys one though I guess I might just have to experiment with cereal / rice milk quantities to get it right.

Alux - the porridge that you made with maizeflour, was that thin like the ground rice that you give to babies? Never though of using maizeflour. Could you have made it stodgier?

DS is 18m. He likes his porridge to be so thick that it is virtually solid I have to cook it to within an inch of it's life! I think that all of the oil in the ricemilk helps as it doesn't stick to the pan.

Maizeflour porridge is basically polenta but I had the finest maizeflour possible - which is what maize tortillas are made of. you can make it as thick or thin as you like. if you want it really thick, reduce the amt of water to 1 to 3 and cook as long as you like to thicken on a low heat. keep stirring when it is 'cooked' and quite thick, it will pull off the sides of the pan while stirring.

pure maize flour is v. low in gluten - don't know if it is lower than oats but worth trying out for those with gluten intolerance.

google polenta or maize porridge. to find who sells it in the UK google maize flour or 'masa' I found it in sainsbury's at a horribly extortionate price. (£4 for 250 grams)

I don't know as I have never used ground rice. but you can make it v. thin so I suppose so.
