Cutting Lactulose out of DD's diet?

Have just got back from the doctors with DD3 as we've been unable to clear up her eczema for a couple of weeks now. Doctor asked me to cut out all lactulose from her diet. Just popped out and bought some Lactofree and Alpro Soya. Read the Lactofree carton and realised that it is not suitable. DD's reaction to Alpro Soya was 'Yuck!'. Can anyone advised on any good brands or products to buy?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along in a moment but your doctor's advice makes no sense to me.

If you suspect cows milk protein allergy is causing your dd's eczema then it is cows milk protein you need to cut out of her diet, not lactose (milk sugar).

If she is suspected of being lactose-intolerant (think bloating, wind, disgusting poo) then cut out the lactose.

Can you tell me how old your dd is?

She's two and a half. I think she meant to cut out all milk products, but did say Lactose.

Well, assuming that it is cow's milk protein you are suspicious of then that ob means no milk, cheese, yogurt and also check other foods such as crisps and biscuits as most have milk as an ingredient. In fact, check everything cause milk turns up all over the place (if you are careful she gets no milk and her eczema doesn't improve within a couple of weeks then it's probably not the cause).

Regarding replacements, there are the soya milks and oat milks and also almond milk. none of these are a nutritional substitute for cows milk (less fat) but in a 2.5 year old that shouldn't be a problem as calories and calcium are easily replaceable through the rest of her diet.

My ds1 wouldn't drink the replacement milks in the same way that children usually drink cows milk but would tolerate it on cereal etc. It is easy to buy soya custard and yogurt (Alpro) or ice cream (Swedish Glace-but there are others). Pure make dairy-free margarine which can be used in baking.

Soya cheese is v. strange so try it if you will but no-one in our house would touch it. Easier to have ham.

Hope that helps.
