Instead of Having to make a dairy and egg free one every year.

Have just made DS's and it's a disaster. Thankfully I left time to have a second attempt at it , but I would love to be able to just go and buy one. Rant over.

Some one posted this link on another thread, don't know if it is of any help as I haven't checked it out yet.

Are these any good, do you think?

trixymalixy · 03/02/2011 22:55

That would be perfect if they did a pirate ship one!!! Thanks

Could you buy the plain cake, cut it into appropriate piraty shapes and cover in (dairy-free) buttercream?

you are definitely not being unreasonable!!

i don't know what your budget is like but I saw this company on a leaflet I was given recently. They seem pretty expensive though and have no idea what the end result tastes like but it shows that there are people willing to tackle the 'free from' market

good luck with getting the cake sorted!

My ds has egg and nut allergy and I have always struggled with making lush cakes! My ds chose to have rocky road for his birthday cake last year as his cakes are never that tasty.......UNTIL......

I recently found this recipe posted by Sterling Mum (TY) on here and it has transformed out lives!
www.mumsnet.com/Recipes?call=RecipePage&pid=2519

You can cut it into sections for brownies or make it as a whole....it is honestly the best egg free cake I have ever tasted and believe me I have made a few!!

Good Luck x

Waitrose would make a gluten free cake for my dd's birthday given enough notice - sadly not much good for this year but might be worth remembering for next year as they might be able to do a dairy and egg free one.

Tescos also do a mix for allergy free cakes.

Good Luck

lukewarmmama · 05/02/2011 21:21

Blue lotus cakes here do dairy/egg free ones - we always get a large chocolate one for DDs birthday and then decorate it however. They don't taste like a second rate cake, quite moist and extremely moreish! Their carrot cupcakes are blooming lovely too.

Loshad · 05/02/2011 21:41

why would you want to buy a cake - always many times more expensive, and many times less tasty than making your own - and easy then to do glutenm/dairy/egg free as needed

eaglewings · 06/02/2011 11:21

Loshad, I think the emotion and longing in OP 'voice' is that it's so hard sometimes not being able to buy a cake off the shelf as parents with kids without allergies can.

Also, for me I don't have the spare energy to cook a cake as well as everything else, so convenience is lovely

trixymalixy · 06/02/2011 13:29

Loshad, I work full time, have 2 pre-schoolers who don't sleep, the house was a bomb site and I have flu. It would just have been nice to be able to say sod it, let's just go and buy a birthday cake. It's quite a lot of pressure when you don't have that option and the cake hasn't worked out.

It was ok in the end, we just smothered it in icing, wasn't as good as last year's but don't think anyone noticed.

Well done Trixy......good work chick ;)

trixymalixy · 06/02/2011 13:35

Thanks for the links, I might just order one next year, save me some time.

shitmagnet - how lovely that you cater for friend's children's allergies Smile. What a fab friend you must be. (and thanks for the recipe...!)

Habbibu · 06/02/2011 15:54

I read somewhere that prune puree was a decent egg substitute.

Habbibu · 06/02/2011 15:56

Gah, scrub that - it's a fat replacer, apparently.

Habbibu · 06/02/2011 15:57

Or egg! here. Google first, then post.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 06/02/2011 16:00

Shitmagnet, what size tins do you use for those quantities, and what temp do you bake at and for how long? Grin

trinitybleu · 06/02/2011 16:01

I only have to deal with dairy free but am super excited to have found a Hello Kitty cake in Tesco that is dairy free! Guess the theme of DD's 4th birthday party in March ....... :o
