Which Anti-Histamine works best?

Went to the docs yesterday about my mistery itch. He's prescribed Fexofenadine which I thought I hadn't tried but turns out (through the wonders of MN search) I have and it didn't work.

I'll give it a months try and then suspect I'll have to go back and in the mean time I'll see occupational health.

But, which anti-histamine is best? I normally take loratadine but think it's stopped working recently, Citerizine makes me sleep.

I keep looking to see if anyone has answered, as interested in the answer myself. No ideas myself, but at least it's a bump!

Valerian works well for ds1 but it does make him a bit sleepy. I though citirizine was meant to be non drowsy as he gets that during the day and seems fine, then valerian at night.

greedychops · 02/02/2011 20:02

Sorry that should be vallergan not valerian

How about desloratadine - I've been told this is loratadine based but more effective, less side effects? works a treat for DS

mumbar · 02/02/2011 20:59

DS uses chlorphenamine (puriton) for reactions. He had cetirizine for a month when hives that wouldn't clear up with clorphenamine.

I thought cetirizine ws meant to be non-drowsy??

How about trying the aquaous calomine for the areas that are itchy?

AtYourCervix · 02/02/2011 22:16

piriton and cetirizine maakes me sleep. searching last years hay fever threads it appears that this fexofenadine made me feel weird too but so far i'm not and not too itchy today either.

it's my face and head that itches in work so not sure about the calamine solution (unless aqueous calamine isn't pink and crusty like calamine?)
will see if this one works and if not request the desloratadine maybe.

You can become immune to them after a while. Dd alternates certirizine with neo clarityn which I think is desloratidine, mostly one of each a day.

I take fexofenadine 180 mg 3 times a day and hydroxiscine a night and singulaire thrown in for good measure!

None of them really work!,

aquaous calamine is very much like suducream in texture and look - except it doesn't go white (or pink!) on the skin. May not work in hair though.
