Alternatives to fats and calcium in milk, yoghurt, cheese etc

Hi there,

I am weaning my 7 mo DS2 who is dairy intolerant. He drinks Neocate but other than this I am struggling to get good fats and calcioum into him (with DS1 his diet was full of full fat milk, cheese, yoghurt, cream etc). Other than Avocado, I can't think of anything else to pack out his diet - at the moment is seems to be plain fruit/veg/pasta/meat (and even that he barely 'eats' - I have given up on puree as we were both crying and am BLW...).

I would be really grateful for any suggestions! On the Ocado website, there is a poor review for Oatly as it contains Palm Oil. Is Palm OIl really that bad?

Thanks

My son is the same age and allergic to dairy, he has calcium supplements. He does also drink very little milk. ASk your dietician if they're needed?

My son was 7.5 months then after massive food aversion just started eating, nothing to meals off the table in days.

Can your son eat soya? If so soya yogurts etc?

Mine can't but I can do thinks like add olive oil to food to bump up calories or his milk (2 scoops added to mashe dfood) or sainsburys do a non soya/dairy spead which I put on rice cakes

If nuts are OK, you can get Almond milk powder. Good to add to porridge / rice pudding though I think 7 months is young for introducing nuts.

Again, it's a little early but Tahini (sesame) is a good source of calcium / calories but also a common allergen.

Palm oil is only in the Oatly Cream and the organic Oatly drink doesn't even have rapeseed oil in.

The concerns surrounding Palm Oil are two fold - destruction of rainforests to grown Palm Oil Plantations and Hydrogenation of Palm Oil creating Transfatty Acids which increase the risks of heart disease etc though this form is more likely to be used in Margarines and processed food though I don't know what form it is in in Oatly (my guess would be pressed oil.)

Hi there...your story sounds so familar! I found out DD2 was dairy allergic when I tried to intoduce standard formula at 4 months. Because she was (and still sometimes can be) a tiny eater and drinker of milk I worried about fat and calcium.

For me I used the following:

  • if he can take soya...Tofutti cream cheese (from Holland and Barrat)...high in fat and some calcium. I used this on a bread stick for then mixed into pasta as a creamy sauce. This poss has more salt than is desirable but for me a life saver at times..
  • Olive oil added to various things.
  • Use his regular formula (for me it was Wysoy) to make custard and rice pudding.

Now...she has just turned two! and for the last 3 months we have introduced dairy gradually she is on everything dairy now apart from her milk - still wysoy.

The other thing I would add is that we were advised to buy mineral water with the highest calcium content we could find, and DS1 drinks that whenever he has water.

Weta beware the high salt content of SOO many mineral waters. Maybe filter tap water would be better there's loads of calcium in greens etc.Gorillas are fruitarian and seem strong!
