Allergies worse when ill.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this my son has just been in hospital with pneumonia, has been on iv antibiotics drip, has not eaten for a week and has been really poorly.

The good news is he is bouncing back now and getting better, the bad news is that his allergies seem to be really bad. Today his face and hands have had bright red patches on them with small hives. He has not eaten anything different than before he was ill, in fact nothing has changed. Also during his illness his eczema disappeared and now its back badly. Confused

He had confirmed allergies to egg and milk and we are discussing coeliac testing with his doctor and he is not eating wheat at this time due to how ill it makes him.

I am obviously so glad that he is getting better but he has only very small amounts of food and it scares me as I have not got a clue to what he is reacting to. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this sensitivity after illness too. Thank you.

just a thought!! it may not be the illness thats brought his allergies out bad could just be a coincidence. I've been told that its the time of year between oct-march my ds always has bad asthma and his eczema seems to flare up glad to hear that your ds is getting better

Not sure how medically proven it is but my allergy is always worse if my body is low due to illness. It makes sense in my mind as my immune system is under pressure, but thats just my experience.

Hope he feels much better soon

I definately feel my daughter reacts more when ill too. I am only talking about mild illness but it always seemed to happened. She used to react to grapes via getting an itchy tongue/throat but normally ate these without problem. Were negative on skin prick tests to them aswell but it happened regularly whilst ill. Also now shes slightly poorly and suffered itchy ears last night. I do believe they are less able to cope with things that maybe their immune system usually copes with. Second you dribbleface. I'm sure she used to get hives also and worsened eczema. Best wishes for your ds, hope he's feeling alot better soon.

It's definitely my experience that my 2 children's eczema is worse when a bit under the weather (also when teething). I guess it is all to do with the immune system. Winter is also the worst time. For my allergic son I'm not sure whether the actual allergies that get worse or just the eczema, as I've never really been able to link the two (he has eczema, but when he eats milk / eggs he gets instant hives and redness/vomiting which go away quite quickly).

I agree my DD does too, not meaning to scare you, bit it was after the drug treatment for Pnuemonia thats DDs problems got generally worse,

I'm wondering if your DS is possibly also intolerant to chemical additives???.....DD is & any medicines send her problems off the scale, due to the amount of rubbish in the meds themselves, she had some skin problems prior to that, but her additive related stomach problems started then :(

I agree with rockin. Could he be allergic to the AB's? My Aunt had an allergy to AB given for celutitis. She didn't react immediatly but only when enough was in her system itswim?

DS certainly gets more hives when run down. But my understanding is allergies are an autoimmune response so it makes sense.

Hows he doing ???

I discovered giving my own DD cut up tablets of Spirulina (GNC have it) made a MASSIVE difference to her recovery, she seemed okay until she went back to School, but she just couldn't cope at all & ended up on part time School as a result :(......

Spirulina info in the link www.resorthealth.com/herbs/spirulina.html

Thank you for your responses, he is doing really well now thanks, quite tired but he's getting there.

I just found it wierd that when he was at his worst his skin was amazing with no eczema at all and then when he started to get better his skin broke down and we had hives after most meals.

He did not eat for nearly a week so maybe that could of been a reason with nothing going in that was affecting his skin?? Just glad that he is better back now to the daily hassle of allergies and sore skin poor thing.
