I think I've been in denial about Mondays peanut challenge and it's crept up on me. DS's allergies go up and down so the hospital want to see how he goes with peanuts.

How do these things work? If he has a strong reaction do they just stop doing it?

TBH I think if he feels a bit yucky after eating peanut he'll refuse to eat anymore and the whole thing will be abandoned Hmm.

Haven't been through this (yet!) but want to wish you all the best.

It will be fine. You'll be in a hospital, and the staff will be really clued-up about allergies. It's the safest possible way to try peanuts...

Good luck!! Let us know how he gets on Smile

Thanks Smile.

Part of me is desperate to get it out of the way and the other it terrified.

Mum is making peanut cookies for DS as he probably won't eat peanut butter.

They do go really slowly. It'll be fine

They may put a canula in first.

Make sure to not give any piriton for 48hrs beforehand.

trixymalixy · 15/01/2011 14:33

Oh and good luck!!!

Good luck :)

I didn't know they did this. We were only offered the skin prick allergy test at Guys.

Though I was terrified, DS walked his first challenge - I'm better at these now as:

  • they'll avoid a big reaction at all costs and are ultra-cautious
  • the biggest danger is death through boredom so take plenty to entertain and bribe and don't forget something for yourself
  • bribe - anything to get them to eat them
  • prepare yourself - if it works (MARSBARS!!!), if it doesn't it can't be too sad a biggie for your son as he'll have been worked up about it. We survive allergic reactions, tests and challenges with our now great mantra 'to make the best of a bad day' it makes me cry when he says it to me now when we come home from hospital but he's totally right - it is exactly what is needed
good luck!!!
