Just wondering if anyone is participating and how you feel if you are in the early weaning group? If anyone was planning to ebf for longer but has changed plans because of the group they were put into? Considering putting ds2 into it but feel a bit uneasy about early weaning as I waited until 23 weeks with ds1 and he did very well and eats a wide variety of food at nearly 4.

hi! my DD takes part in the eat study. we have history of allergies. we are in the early intro group. it seemed at first that she had an allergy to dairy, but they did further investigations and discovered its an intollerance to an enzyme in yogart. i have continued to breastfeed, but think i would have done anyway. she eats all the foods we do, just means making sure that she takes a couple of spoonfuls of stuff most of which we have anyway. the early weaning consists of a couple of weeks of baby rice or veg to get them used to it first, then introduction of diffent foods, but very gradual. really easy to do. my DS was weaned at 6 months and i see no difference in the trying or eating of things. i have recommended friends to participate with their children and they too are all in early intro group and have had no problems.

Interesting that I know no-one who's in the group who are breast feeding until 6 months, considering it's supposed to be 50:50?

We enrolled our son in the study and have had no problems with introducing these food early to him. I am a doctor and have a good knowledge of study conditions and ethics surrounding trails and this study has very good ethical considerations. I found the staff to be excellent and my son had allergy testing before we started. We were seen by a consultant who was also fantastic. I have really good support from the team also.

The only negatives are having to exlcusively breastfeed for the start of it and having to prepare eggs! Im still breastfeeding now but my son had no formula milk until he was 6 months

I have had a really easy baby who has always eaten well which is why I decided to do the study and also because of my personal feelings that by avoiding foods that may cause allergies actually make you more likely to get allergies (no peanut allergies in countries where their diet consists of lots of nuts). The government guidelines seem to be constantly changing and no doubt they may change due to the results of this study and we will all be giving our babies peanuts and eggs with their milk

I think people should do what they feel is best for their babies

hello - another one in the early introduction group here. We're just entering the yoghurt phase and I'm not sure she's going to get the hang of this spoon thing any time soon!
Just wondered how anyone else in that group had gone about the rest of weaning? I was vaguely intending to keep only to the study foods until at least six months and then take a more baby led approach to introducing food as actual nutrition (IYSWIM) - is that likely to work...?

(should also add that I'm fully aware of the background debate and entirely happy with the study's ethics and implementation: not a medical doctor but am a research scientist in another field of biology, and do not want another long discussion triggered!)

Also in the early introductory group (my older child allergic to some tree nuts), my baby is 7 months already and happily eats a wide variety of foods including the key foods, all went brilliantly, the staff is absolutely wonderful (not only for allergies but other general health issues so you get a chance for your child to be seen by top pediatricians).
Goldrill, I did that, kept 6 key foods for the first 3 months ( I mean from 3-6 months) mainly, adding a bit of fruit and veg to mix those with, all went great. First 2 weeks struggle a bit to make sure he had 100% of all, and then managed to combine for example fish+egg+tahini in one meal, so that made a massive difference.
I am so happy we joined, best thing we did.
I do feel guilty about the way we madly avoided nuts (in pregnancy and early years) with my eldest.

I mean fish+ egg + tahini + baby rice/mashed veg (usually butternut) otherwise was to rich and strong.

Hi
I'm in the control group, so for me it was just BF for the 6 months. I did introduce a little fruit and veg just before 6 months but made sure that none of the food included the ones which the other group are providing data on

thankyou - we'll give that a go I think.

Another random question (which I am a bit loathe to phone and ask the drs about as I suspect I should know this!!): DD has had yoghurt three times now and each time she's been quite sick the next day. Prior to this I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times she has so much as spat up. I'm assuming this is just a reaction to solid food and that's what you expect when starting weaning?
She doesn't seem to do this with the baby rice, but I think that could be consistency - it's also complicated by her drooling a lot more now as she seems to be teething. (The next day seems a very long time lag for any specific reaction to the yoghurt if it's vomiting too...)
Hmm. Is this normal do you think?

I'd give the help line a call they have a the doctors and a dietitian at the other end help you. From all the daft questions I've asked them I am sure that yours is a perfectly sensible one!! Although the standard answer I get from HVs is "that's normal and they're all different".

wow bad grammar by me on the last one - although I think the gist of it is there.
