My ds now 11 months has been constipated for 6 months he is on lactulose that does nothing. He has a milk egg allergy and i have been told to avoid soya. so he is breast fed. ive been told today to cut out milk from my diet as i am breast feeding. i love my cheese but if it helps ds than i will do it.

has anyone had the same. what worked for them.

DS2 same age, same problem. Also allergic milk and soya and takes lactulose. Since we dropped dairy he does go but still very painful, haven't really got a solution but when DD had same problem did improve with age and more fluids (I know this is really hard) so there is hope but I know exactly what you are going through

yawningmonster · 05/10/2005 02:53

My ds is now almost 13 months old and we have struggled with constipation since he went onto solids. He went upto 15mls of lactulose and then dr added coloxil drops daily with still no luck, after a particularly bad bout wherehe hadnt gone for 14 days we went into hospital where he had 3 suppositories and two enemas. Anyway since then he has been going regularly and we are now down to 2 mls lactulose. DS is dairy free and I was dairy free until about 5weeks ago when I slowly reintroduced it, all going well in pooh department in our house now.

ghosty · 05/10/2005 03:18

What about fruit? Can he eat fruit?
I found that pureed pear was great for a bunged up baby ...

bumptobabies · 05/10/2005 07:44

my ds was exactly the same, i found increasing his water intake and also massaging his tummy in a clockwise direction with chamomile helped. he is now 2 and all is well in that department.
i feel for you as they really struggle with it hope it passes soon(litraly)

Thanks guys poor yawning monster that must have been awful. have been using baby massage but he is also allergic to chamomile so cant use that. have just started his on movicol which isnt supposed to be used until there 2 but consultant says its fine. so i am hoping this me being dairy free and lactulose will work. They think his bowel is stretched and inflamed so if we can do soft poos for a while it should correct itself and hopefully it wont be painful to pass. oh and gave him 2 suppositories to clear him out first. All you want is for your little ones to be pain free but allergies etc are literally a pain in the ar*e.

My 10 month old DS can get constipated. I give him HIPP organic pureed prune pots. He has 1 pot at least every 3 days and if he is constipated, we give him 2 pots a day. This really helps. Also prune juice from health shops works a treat.

tatt · 13/10/2005 05:52

increased water intake, fig biscuits if you can find any milk free ones, dried apricots (but the preservative, which is the laxative bit, may cause problems for some babies) prunes or prune juice. Found fig biscuits the quickest and pleasantest. Fresh fgs would probably work if you can find those asier than suitable biscuits.

my 1st msg so apologies for not knowing the lingo - my baby (!!!!) is five months old and is constipated. I was happily breastfeeding but my milk supply dried up due to health probs i've had her on formula (not full time) but she is severly constipated and screams each time she needs to perform - she's on nanny as she has had a reaction to sma (hence i thought all cow's milk formula???)

does anyone have any cure as i'm desperately trying to breastfeed but health probs still there and surprise surprise v' little milk. can't let her go hungry but each bottle of nanny seems to be condeming her to more pain

tried extra water (no go) massage with mandarin (no go) bicyling legs, pure apple juice in water, bathing......

anyone had a similar reaction to 'nanny'? what did you do?

poppiesinaline · 31/03/2006 18:56

sorry to hear of all these problems. DS2 didnt suffer as severely as all of your babies but he was constipated as a very young baby and I took him to a cranio-osteopath. After one session he has never been constipated since. I dont know if cranio-osteopathy would help a baby that is severely constipated but maybe its worth a try.

DS's constipation problems got much better since he is dairy free. HE has also\lost his permanently bloated tummy.

Cork1, I'm afraid there's no cure as such, but there are some things that may help to ease the problem while she is able to tolerate the milk (or more permanent substitutes). I would advise a good chat with the GP about the possibility of getting neocate in prescription. Unfortunately, many children who are allergic/intollerant to cows milk, can't tolerate goats or sheeps milk either Sad.

kimbolina · 17/05/2006 21:51

to chandra, just wanted to know.whats neocate? im a new member and my dt has sufferd from constipation for 3 years, ive just introduced her to goats milk but unsure if it will help, not had any tests for cows-milk-intolerance but i think the doctors round here wouldnt want to help!she also has mild excema, should i try a dairy free diet? my dt takes lactulose-20mls but her poos not impoved much and is having lots of accidents in pants, worried about her starting school in september, any advice anyone-much appreciated!

yawningmonster · 18/05/2006 05:16

Neocate and Pepti Junior are both hypo allergenic formulas given to children with allergies to soy and cows milk, they are fully broken down and must be prescribed, they are not available on the shelves. They do have quite a distinctive taste so if your child is used to something else it can be difficult for them to tolerate the taste. I would only go dairy free with advice from a doctor, but would recommend trying a different doctor or a paediatrition if you can get a recommendation in your area. If you do go dairy free you will need to check everything as many products contain dirivitives of dairy such as bread, meusli bars, flavourings in crisps and so forth. It sounds as though your little one is retaining due to pain causing the accidents to occur around the backlog. Hope someone else has more advise and you get some relief for you little one.

threebob · 18/05/2006 08:26

Cork1, I think you should post for support on the feeding threads. Your supply is probably being affected from giving the formula and therefore less stimulation at the breast, possibly moreso than your health problems.

Briwish · 05/06/2007 19:23

Hi All - this is also my first message as my baby girl of 5 and 1/2 months is also suffering bad constipation. I am midly dairy intolerant but still love a piece of cheese so that will have to go! She last did a poo on Saturday after 9 days and 3 days of lactulose solution. Does the lactulose really work as I am not very impressed so far!? [hmmm] I am still breast feeding but she moved on to solids about a month ago and I have been trying to get her to drink more fluid - water with pear juice/ water with peach juice etc but it is very heavy going and she does not appear to be interested - any other helpful hints to get her actually drinking?

Also have been told that baby rice, banana and few other things can bung them up. is this the case with other people?

Chandra · 06/06/2007 17:20

Briwish,

We never found lactulose helpful but the only other thing that was prescribed came with a lot of warnings from the doctor (aparently a product that was not for children) fortunately he didn't have to have it, as after waiting for 10 days he spontaneously did go while DH was picking up the medicine from the pharmacy (classical )

I think there are plenty of good advice through out this thread, perhaps trying some of it would help?

Welcome to Mumsnet!

boo64 · 12/06/2007 17:47

hi all

Ds suffered constipation quite regularly until about 18 months. He is fine now although not sure why - maybe he just matured out of it.

At the time though a HV suggested peas and similar veg with husks and they did seem to make quite a difference. Worht a try for those babies who are weaned.

He used to get so grumpy and bloated with it so you all have my sympathy! I hope it gets better.

Briwish · 12/06/2007 19:15

Dear All

Went to see the osteopath and she has been going once every two days since but noticed some blood today. We have another appointment on Friday so hopefully we slowly make progress!

LilRedWobblyGut · 12/06/2007 19:19

DD suffers from constipation and is milk protein intollerant. She is 13 months old and on Lactulose with the occasional suppoistry for when she really gets stuck Poor love hates it and I feel awful for doing it to her.

yomellamoHelly · 12/06/2007 19:27

Ditto recommendation for osteopath. Really turned everything around for ds1.

JerseyDebbie · 02/03/2009 20:33

Both my boys have suffered with constipation as babies but my youngest had it worse. Sure it's dairy intolerance so try to keep them dairy free. However, Oatly Milk made a big difference and enabled us to come off Movicol, suppositories etc...It's worth a try and sold in most health shops.

lilypond1 · 05/03/2009 19:26

my 12week old daughter has been constipated for ever!!! i breastfeed throughout the day but give her bottles at night so we can all get some sleep! her formula is a special transit milk and i give her fresh clementine juice and 150ml of water every day, but she still struggles, only going every 2 or 3 days! does anyone have a suggestion? is she too young for prune juice?
