CMPI without eczema?

Hi there everyone. Just wondering whether anyone's LOs have had an intolerance to cow's milk formula but without having eczema.

My DS is 12 weeks and FF (BF till 5 weeks. He has reflux, which I know can be linked to CMPI. No eczema but following a bug two weeks ago, he has loads of white clumps in his poo (there were always quite a few , and lots of mucus too, in addition to the reflux. I am wondering whether this is just caused by the bug or whether I should ask his paed tomorrow about CMPI being a possible factor. Although I have to say is reflux was just as bad when BF (minus the mucusy, lumpy poo)

Mine certainly had CMPA with no eczema. Got mild eczema when he progressed with a soya allergy though. Each of DS allergies have presented in a different way, so there's always something to try and keep an eye on all the time!

We started on the reflux while BF too, don't remember how bad his backside was though sorry! I do remember it went back to runny and green when he started Nutramigen though!!
Mention anything you think is strange to the Paeds, that's what they're there for. Don't feel daft if you get a list of things out of the change bag either, cos you wont remember everything when you actually sit down in front of them.
Also, feel free to make notes of what they say, or you'll forget half of it too.

Thanks hwhite I will ask the paed tomorrow. I really hope we don't have to go down the nutramigen route, or even worse neocate, as my friend's baby had to have that and did not find it very palatable to say the least.... oh well, let's hope.

the younger they are, the more likely you are to get them to take it, so hopefully ~12weeks ish shouldn't be too much of an issue. 6months+ it's certainly more of a challenge!

Mine had dairy intolerance (don't know what CMPI stands for so sorry if this isn't related) and reflux and only a teeny tiny patch of eczema. The reflux was also just as bad as when on breast milk. I actually didn't know that dairy intolerance and eczema were linked.

Hannah, well, yes, you would hope he might just lap it up if we do end up with it... I can imagine it's nigh on impossible to persuade a six monther to drink that stuff. I smelt my friend's - it's hideous.

monkeyflippers, thanks for the info - CMPI is cow's milk protein intolerance.

Hideous is correct. Don't even lick your fingers if it's dripped...
You have to smile sweetly at them regardless if it stinks to high heaven! If they see you turn your nose up and screw your face, you really think they'll associate it with something nice they want to drink ?(especially as they'll never see you touch it with a barge pole!)

So how is cow's milk protein intolerance different to dairy intolerance and how do you tell? My DCs was never confirmed with any tests but was instead cured by having a complete break from dairy.

auntevil · 11/01/2011 14:36

Cow's milk protein - casein is a protein Grin and as such is an allergy, whereas lactose - which is the sugar in milk - is classed as an intolerance. The difference is how they are digested in the body, but both are contained in dairy. CMP is contained in more elements of milk products used in food production than lactose.
Testing for intolerances depend on the age for dairy. Stools for a 12 week old would probably be the first start.
I have 3 with dairy intolerance, 2 are lactose, 1 CMP. The DS with CMP has beautiful skin - not an eczema patch in sight - the other 2 have eczema in varying degrees.
