If your dc is allergic to CMP do they react on contact too?

Dd2 came out in hives recently on contact with milk (as per my thread of a few weeks ago- my fault - Blush Sad).

I don't know whether this means that her allergy is particularly severe or whether this is just par for the course?

Dd1 has never come into contact with egg or her allergens, but milk just seems more around the place.

i am as usual at the moment stressing and confused Hmm

Yep, hives on contact here. In fact, if my partner has had a coffee with milk in, and gives DD a kiss, she will get hives Sad

She has some pretty severe allergies though, anaphylactic to CMP, if ingested.

misdee · 12/12/2010 20:50

Yes she does.
However her 'score' on rast test is low, last rast indicated she was no longer allergic. But milk callenge failed at first point (dab on skin). So def still allergic.
She has an epipen as also asthmatic.

Yes, DS reacts on contact. It is scary, right... ? I don't blame you for stressing.

I don't know what these contact reactions 'mean' and I've no idea what would happen if DS ingested milk.

How are you getting on with the nursery?

mumbar · 12/12/2010 21:15

RAST tests, the IgE thing doesn't show the severity of the reaction.

DS has random allergic reactions to an unknown allergen, and hives to a few foods that didn't show a reaction on a RAST test.

DD used to get awful swlling & hives on skin contact. Whenever we went out to eat (& take her food with us) we looked like over anxious parents wiping down highchairs and tables before she sat in them. So glad now she has outgrown it, it was a nightmare. Has left us with an anxious little girl who has HUGE food issues. Sad

Whelk · 12/12/2010 21:48

Thank you all, it seems that its fairly common then. The not knowing what that means in terms of ingestion is very hard isn't it (for a control freak like me)?

Singarainbow - lovely to hear of a dd who has outgrown her allergies but i am so sorry to hear she has huge food issues. That must be tough... Do you mind me asking when she outgrew it?

Misdee I remember that, felt for you.
I find the hospital food challenges pretty hard although dd1 did pass her baked egg one, there was another child there who didn't Sad.
We will probably have a lightly cooked egg challenge with dd1 before she starts school in September.

everytime we have been in for food challenges, no child got past the 2nd stages :( all the mums sat at the tables saying 'see you next year then'

singarainbow · 12/12/2010 22:27

Whelk, she was 5 when she finally was able to be challenged. And she was fine, no tummy issues or anything.
It was amazing, given that before she was 1 she had had 2 anaphylactic rections.
Had 2 other kids since, both EBF and milk free til they were 1, and both ok.
I know we were lucky, and my heart goes out to those who are still struggling

I'm pleased to hear about your dd and your subsequent children. Its like the holy grail, growing out of them, almost impossible to imagine!

Yes, DS reacts if you kiss him after having tea with milk in. We used to not be able to take him in coffee shops as he would react when they were steaming the milk.

His last skin prick was negative and we are going for a challenge at the end of the month. He'll definitely fail though as I'm sure the hives he had recently were due to dairy.

mintyneb · 15/12/2010 11:05

yep, 3.8 yo DD reacts on contact - that's how we initially knew she was allergic to dairy. Two weeks ago she accidentally put her finger in some ice-cream. I immediately wiped it clean but we think there may have been some left under her fingernail as a few minutes later she was rubbing her eye and when I looked the bottom lid had swollen up and she had hives all over her check, across her eye and onto her forehead where she had touched the skin :-(

Her last RAST test back in August was 8.2 so not considered hugely high but she is obviously quite sensitive still

Whelk · 16/12/2010 16:47

trixy- wishing you and your ds huge amounts of luck for his challenge!

Mintyneb- gosh that sounds horrible.

I am finding dd2's milk allergy very hard. I am considering giving up work as the anxiety of her going to nursery is too much Sad

Thanks Whelk!

FWIW DS has been going to nursery for over 2 years now and it has been fine. He has had a couple of reactions where there has been milk on a table, but piriton has sorted it. Nursery have been very good

Whelk · 17/12/2010 14:03

Thanks trixy- My dd1 (allergic to egg but previously had many allergies) has been going to nursey for 3 years and dd2 (egg and milk allergies) has been going for 9 months.

I am going through some sort of crisis about it all at the moment Confused
