Anyone have any advice on a 'tomato rash'?

DS 17mo gets a blotchy rash on his face whenever he eats tomato based food - even baked beans!

The nursery noticed it first and pointed it out, they didnt seem too concerned so i thought nothing of it, although yesterday he had a very tomatoey veggie stew and his face got really red and blotchy. It calmed down later on and is fine today.

Now he has eczema so i am wondering if it is related to that.

Should i be worried? I dont want to stop giving him tomatoes as he loves them!

TIA

Is it just where it gets on his skin ? A lot of people have contact redness from tomatoes (my mum does) but it doesn't cause any problems

My dd2 gets this too. She loves bolognese but it really irritates her face.

Does your DS get it where it has been in contact with the skin or does it come up after he has eaten tomatoes regardless?

I think dd's only comes up after contact with tomatoes on her skin and I have decided not to give her really tomatoey things for a while.

I think her's is caused by the tomatoes being quite acidic. Not sure if it is an allergy as such.

My dd1 has eczema and food allergies but thankfully apart from the tomato rash dd2 hasn't shown any signs.

no it doesnt seem to be as a result of skin contact, funnily enough it crops up on the really dry bits of his face.

we dont want to stop giving him these foods as he loves spag bol, chili, veggie stew etc, but we will just tone down the amount of tomato we put into it.

i was just concerned we were doing him some harm by it, i might visit the HV next week to have a chat about it.

Thank you o wise folk of MN! Smile

Your ds's sounds more like an allergy in that case. Probably best to get it checked out.

DD's is more like contact irritation. She is 2 now - hopefully she will grow out of it or learn to eat less messily.

For those with contact irritation a thin layer of vaseline before eating a tomatoey food will help.
