Anyone else crave the foods they can't have in the house?

DS is allergic to pine nuts (among other things). We have no nuts in the house and it's all I can think about eating these days Blush. Being veggie doesn't help either as I loved nuts.

I would give my right arm for a bowl of pasta covered in pesto.

And peanut M&M's.

Omnomnom peanut M&Ms.

Why does being veggie change anything nut wise?
DD2 has a huge pack of penguins in her bedroom, I want them. DD1 throws up at the sight/smell of chocolate so they're pretty much hidden away and never venture outside of DD2's bedroom.
{sigh}

Because they have lots of protein in them so I added them to lots of recipes.

Walnut and avocado risotto sounds lovely.

I used to be vegetarian, but DS is allergic to eggs, dairy, nuts/seeds and some pulses and I don't know how to be vegetarian without those foods. I have had to re-learn how to cook!

Could your craving have something to do with your nutritonal needs? (I know had incredibly strong cravings for eggs and dairy when I was feeling run-down after a 3 day bug.)

My ds is highly allergic to all nuts, but we still eat peanut butter, pesto and M&Ms. We just make sure we keep them away from him and always double wash the surfaces, plates, bowls etc. He's never had a reaction in our house and he's 12 now.

Don't feel that the entire family has to go without favourite foods, just be careful and sensible.

Meglet, I think it's fair enough to have a nut-free house if it means you can all relax a little bit at home - constant vigilance when you are out and about is exhausting - and depressing. My DS reacts on skin contact with milk and I need to be able to take a shower for 5 minutes knowing that he can't get hold of any while I'm busy. I know he will have to take responsibility for his own safety eventually but he is still very, very young.

We do have milk, eggs and mayonnaise for DH in the (locked) fridge and peanut butter on a high shelf but I try to keep our home as free from DS's allergens as possible. I share DS's restricted diet because I am still breastfeeding him, but I think I will probably carry on eating the same things even when he eventually stops. I've got used to eating meat (yeugh!) and my cravings for 'forbidden' foods are almost non-existent now that I have learned to balance our new diet.

Also, I want to protect DS from feeling inferior because he can't have things that other people can, and from thinking that life is unfair. I really do sympathise with your nut-free house policy. If you want to stick with it, I reckon your cravings will go away in time.

I luuurrvvve peanut butter on toast - but dont have it in the house as son has a peanut allergy and tbh im too scared to risk it - I do sometimes treat myself to a snickers if he is spending the night at nanny's!!

misdee · 05/11/2010 13:25

we have all the allergens in the house. dd4 reacts on contact alone with milk and eggs, so keep them away from her.

atm i have banned nutella as the older girls got a bit slack with putting it away, and left it with the lid off, on the table. i caught dd4 about to delve fingers first into it.

DS is touch sensitive to nuts and always reacts anaphylactically so we have to be totally clean - but when I've had enough I go to the bottom of the garden, with rubber gloves (no - not what you're thinking) no - I go and eat NUTS and then I come in, floss, brush and breathe ... Mad - but it works for me!!!!!!!!!!!
