I have been on here before after my DS had suspected allergic reactions to ketchup and also has had bad hayfever and rash on his face most of the summer.

At the end of Augest DS had what I thought was hives on his face but did't go with antihistamine after 4 days so thought it was something else - excema or something. GP 'scratched' DS' back which began to welt and confirmed his face was hives, prescibed oilatum and double base as well as ceterizine hydrochloride daily for a month.

When this course had finished saw a GP about whether to continue he said no, allergies are hard to determine and as not analphalatic (sp?) not much point in testing as hard to pin point. Myself and other GP felt it was pollen related.

Since he has come off the daily antohistamines he has has a constant runny nose - altho some days worse than others and its clear so presuming not a cold??

The skin on his face has been dry again for a few days so been using the double base 3 times a day and tonight it blistered slightly so I gave him 5ml of chlorophenamine.

What I have noticed tho and was wondering if its connected is DS is back to opening his bowels non regulary and its quite 'sticky'. He has again started with a very sore bottom after passing a stool that looks like its burnt his skin?? A bit like the rash on his face he gets. He use to get this but I've only just seemed to make the connection its returned after he's not on antihistamine. (has been on AH since May)

Please any ideas or suggestions of what it could be. I don't really want to go back to the GP sounding like a whingy mum but if I have ideas I oucld perhaps make some suggestions??

Thanks. xx

The begging emoticon got the better of me! I think that you should go back to the GP - even if they think - which they won't - that you're a whingy mum, who cares, you're trying to make your DS's life better, what's wrong in that?
Me and my DS's get the constant colourless runny nose. I was told it was 'nasal disturbance' nothing to be done, just one of those things. DS2 in the summer had an adult strength nasal spray (prescribed) which did help, but it's not ideal for constant use. apparently anything can set it off, dust, aroma, food, pollen - you name it. As you can't avoid everything, you just have to live with it. it's annoying, but it's true. Limiting some of the major allergens at hayfever season may help a bit.
It does sound like your son is 'atopic'. Hayfever, reactions to allergens, dry skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, hives) and it can also give internal conditions such as food intolerances etc, so you could be right re the 'poo'.
sorry it's not helpful, but it's always worth checking out as even if they can't do much, the drugs that treat conditions change and you might find something that does the job well. [hsmile]

Thanks, He is fine on the whole so try to underplay it but its not ideal when he wants to sctratch his bum in public [hgrin]

He had 'welts' on his face again last night but antihistamines got rid of them after about 15 minutes.

I'll monitor it and se what GP says if things don't improve. Thankyou for replying.

Sorry your DS is suffering, you too for that matter :(.....

just a few suggestions that might be worth you looking into further

"urticaria" & food additive sensitivities, especially "azo dyes" & Benzoate Preservatives"(my own DDs skin problems where down to this)

Dairy, or lactose intolerance, known to cause itchy bums & stool problems, along with other things such as skin problems, my own DD is intolerant to lactose, so is fine with milk, but only "lactolite" milk, normal milk affects her stomach badly, & during a flare up she can't stomach any dairy at all

DD was fine when younger, but gradually thins got worse after a couple of course of antibiotics :(

also look into soy & egg intolerance (they pop up in all kinds of things & aren't clearly labeled unless you know what to look for name wise, ketchup being 1)

Maybe look at keeping a food diary, & maybe try an exclusion diet & watch out for flare ups when he's given food again

if none of that works, then try looking into "histamine rich foods" in some cases it can be a combination of things that cause the "histamine" or allergic response

ANTI histamines work by dampening down the bodies natural defenses to histamine, but histamine occurs naturally in a lot of foods, but you will most likely find its only 1 or 2 of those foods that cause you problems, as they over load your system with hystamine, at a time when your body is releasing it to combat pollen or other allergens.... for example, I can't eat tomatoes in high pollen months with out a hayfever like reaction, fine eating them at other times, ....friends Son is the same with Bananas, but affect his ashma....hope that makes sense Confused

you'll find lots of info on all the above if you google :)

hope thats of some help & that you find the cause

Thanks Rockin Hippy that is amazing advice.

I had been thinking intolerances and thinking genetic link as I have had IBS for 20 years so wonder if I may have them too.

Certainly I had thoughts about milk/ lactose intolerance - especially with the stools.

I had considered a food diary and started to keep one but couldn't find any relationship but hadn't looked a preservatives or lactose. It is true during the hayfever season - which he is bad from April - September he does suffer more.

I'll get googling and if its ok with you print this page to show GP - it all seems to go out of head when I visit and I forget the small things.

Thanks again you've been most helpful.

It took me ages to get to the bottom of DS's problem - random lumps coming up on his face every few days. The mystery wasn't solved until we saw a different GP, who suggested an allergy. It turned out he was allergic to eggs.

By the time he was five he'd grown out of it Smile.

MumBarTheDoorZombiesAreComing · 21/10/2010 20:23

Ah glad your DS grew out of it - my DS is now 6 but seems to be growing into his Confused.

He is fine for a period than bam its back so go through periods of concern, thinking I'm over reacting, convinced I'm a paniker, to thinking its gone WTF is causing this s=when it happens again.

Its purely his face, nose (altho fine today) and then his stools sometimes. He does get 'contact welts' on his legs etc from car seat but it seems to be some sort of reaction dependent on his histamine levels??

Thanks for all the advice I'ts good to know I'm not alone and just because no cause is known and its not constant that I'm not going mad. Sad
