Allergy to orange (juice)

My DD is one. She was baby led weaned and had her first citrus when she was about eight months or so, with no ill effects.

About a month ago, I was discussing DD's water intake with a friend (not really enough) and she suggested very diluted fresh orange juice.

I gave it a go - and that night she had a rash. Not like the ones I see when I google "citrus orange rash", not blotchy - a series of red dots, concentrated around her right armpit and down her right hand side. But passing the "glass test" (although I did worry for a minute there)

Since the orange juice was the only thing that was new, I cut it out completely for three weeks. They took a time to go. But by the end of the three weeks, I'd pretty much convinced myself it wasn't the orange. We'd bought some new baby bubble bath as well, and I thought that was more likely.

So last night I tried the dilute orange juice as well - and there it was again. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm not allergic to anything and neither is DH, so I'm feeling my way a bit here...

Orange is highly acidic and doesn't leave an alkili ash in yr gut like lemon and grapefruit so many people have an intolerance to it. On my blood type diet A types and O types shouldn't have orange.

How is dd with other fruits - does she like them? My ds is fructose and sucrose intolerant. although he always liked puree apple and pear, he never really liked fruit. He used to say bananas made him feel funny. When the Gastro dr showed me the list of fruits with the highest ratio of fructose per 100g, i realised that i really only liked fruits with a low fructose content - apart from apples and pears too! sometimes the body tells you what you have problems with. remember also that there is more vit c in a tomato than an orange etc, so no orange in a diet isn't going be a problem, and might be more tooth friendly.

Does anyone in your family suffer reactions like this?

I ask because my son had exactly the same thing which turned out to be an allergy to oranges which can be genetic (my father also had this allergy).

Ask your doctor to do an allergy test.

If he is allergic, there is a chance he could grow out of it. This can be quite common with fruit allergies.

A friend of Ds cannot have orange juice from the supermarket, even those labelled fresh squeezed, because of the production methods. He can have juice that has been squeezed fresh from the fruit however.

Citrus allergy is fairly common. My aunt had it and I did too as a child but outgrew it later. I didn't realise it had such direct genetic links SlummyMummy but that certainly fits in our case.
