Egg White allergy DD3

BlueBumedFly · 01/10/2010 09:50

Rast results back today and DD3 is ok with egg yoke but allergic to egg white.

Rast was 0.8 which I know is only class 2 and not anywhere near anaphylaxis for which I am counting every single lucky star that must be watchig over us.

So please all egg allergy mums, where do I go from here, I only know about nut allergies!

Obviously off the list are scrambled/fry etc egg, mirange, Mayo but what else? She tollerates cooked eggs in cakes etc fine so I don't want to stop those as she is ok. However, pasta has previously made her vomit as a baby.

Please reassure me, I am having a really bad time with other aspects of my life right now so am a bit over emotional

Thanks

Hi BBF, I would say the egg thing is easy to handle - don't stress about it too much.

I think the key is the temperature things are cooked in, so cakes and anything deep fried should be fine. Some ice creams and desserts you should watch out for. Pasta is easy to avoid just make sure you get the durum wheat one. You're used to label reading so I won't remind you about it!

I'm racking my brains for anything else... sausages! Quite a few brands have egg in them so watch out for that.

I'm sure you'll have some other tips following but please don't be too worried it's a relatively easy thing to avoid ime Smile

Thanks bilbomum, she is a big ice cream and sausage eater as all 3 year olds are so I guess keep going unless the ice cream is one of those organic handmade fresh cream ones and I will scour labels of course.

So if sausages have egg White but they have been baked hot then chances are she is fine with them because of the temperature thing, I will keep a strict eye out for party food though as that is almost always cold deli stuff.

Thanks so much for posting and being reassuring, very much appreciated xx

BOth my DSs have problems with egg. They are now 10 and 8 and we have just got used to it over the years.
They don't have cake (although the 8 yr does nowadays actually, the 10 yr old still too suspicious to try) and we just avoid anything blatantly eggy. Ice cream is a problem the posher it gets!
You just have to check labels on processed stuff. But we get sausages from the butcher - the better ones are less likely to have unexpected ingredients.
I can honestly say it hasn't been much of an issue and they are pretty clear about what they cant eat round other people's houses.

Katisha - many thanks, I did suspect that the posher the ice cream the less meaty sausages bigger the problem! We get farmers market sausages which she loves - the spicier the better and have never had any issues although I will check with them in future.

The good thing is she really does not like eggy things or pasta at all and avoids both like the plague. I guess we should all listen to our bodies a lot more!

i find most dried pastas are fine. but always best to check.

BlueBumedFly · 01/10/2010 15:34

Hi Misdee - its odd you know, most do say that there is no egg but it still has a tendency to make her vomit.

She has had RASTS and skin prick tests for wheat and she is apparently fine. I do find 100% wheat products like pasta, shreddies etc make her poorly so we just avoid. I just cannot see what else it could be??

Oh the day I gave her egg custard and mac-cheese on the same day when she was about a year old..... goodness me that was a bad day!

Hi BBF. Sorry to hear about your dd and the other aspects in your life Sad

I would echo the points made about posh ice cream and also add that some gravy granules contain egg.

Generally its not too bad at all once they can tolerate baked egg which your dd can.

BlueBumedFly · 01/10/2010 22:03

Hi whelk - thanks and yes, had read to avoid Bisto which explains a pattern when visiting MIL.

Hey, it could be 1000 times worse, am just fragile and I know this is the best possible outcome I could realistically hope for.

However, we were at a wedding last week that had massive pavlovas, it did cross my mind about the possible allergy outcome but I think I just thought it would be ok as it's cooked egg and she has always been ok with cakes. However, in the true style of my dd she elected for another serving of lamb over desert. Odd child bless her.
