I was just wondering if there is a withdrawal period when you first eliminate gluten from the diet and how long it lasts and what the symptoms are? TIA

Not sure what you mean by withdrawal but it takes about 3-4 days for my DS tummy to settle down after each glutening - but can take 6 months for the bowel to heal.

Perhaps withdrawal is retraction of carbs ?

I mean feeling worse before you feel better.I am 4 days in and have felt dreadful.I have suspected I have had this for years abd after 2 awful skin episodes and dreadful stomach problems I decided to give it a go! First 3 days felt dreadful like flu but today is better although still feel foggy headed

Do you mean wheat intolerance or coeliac. Because if you do have coeliac you do need to have blood test and then other test which do have to be done before you take out gluten. You need advice anyway as you need to make sure you are still getting enough vitamins as some are mostly found in wheat. Also it is in all sorts of thing and you do need help working it all out. My dd have a intolerance and she gets better within 48 hours

peeweewee · 06/10/2010 19:05

I went off gluten last year and after 10 days I felt terrible, including constipation. Kept it up and about a week later was fine again.

If I now eat gluten I have stomach cramps, bloated, windy, headaches/dizzy, and joint pain. Fun.

I also had a negative result for a blood test for gluten, which apparently is not uncommon.

Does anyone take or has tried a powder for healthy bowels, colon called Lepicol? I've been on it 9 days and it seems very good so far, also trying to cut out products containing wheat and lactose because when i have milk i feel sick and anything containing wheat or gluten i bloat enormously and get a sharp stabbing pain in my left side, around waist level, Dr says that's the large bowel, he still insists i have I.B.S, sent me for a colonoscopy last yr which showed diverticuli high up in my large bowel, but man who did test forgot to take photos so no evidence sent clear result to my G.P, I am now thinking the best thing i can do is have allergy tests.

SpringHeeledJack · 08/10/2010 21:05

just marking my place (as a possible coeliac waiting for diagnosis)

noddy- I gave up gluten in August as I'd done a google diagnosis on myself and come up as coeliac. I felt lousy for the first ten days (mind you I did only give up because I felt lousy- so the lousiness may have just been a continuation of my earlier lousiness iykwim)- but after two weeks I felt great- it really seemed to work. No nausea cramps tiredness bloating etc...

unfortunately now I have to go back on gluten so I can have tests in a fortnight's time. Am not looking forward to it much!

I'd say give it a couple of weeks and see how you feel. A gluten free diet is a lot of hassle if you don't actually get any benefit from it!

May be joining the "club". My identical twin sister has been diagnosed (via biopsy) in the past 6 months which gives me a 70-85% chance of developing it.

Midwife took a bloody sample from me a week or so ago and I've now been asked to go and see the Doctor next week. to discuss the results. I assume this isn't an "all-clear".

However, I have NO symptoms at all. A bit tired in this pregancy but I have a pretty iron constitution.

What is the likely outcome if they found antibodies in my blood but I don't (yet) have symptoms?

blanchedevereaux · 11/11/2010 12:26

I do have antibiodies to wheat but my doctor told me as I have no symptoms just to ignore it and get on with my life!

I think he is deranged! Surely the next steps would be get a biopsy (after I give birth) to confirm yes or no?

SpringHeeledJack · 18/11/2010 10:48

checking in again

got a positive diagnosis today after biopsy- am delighted

was lurking doubt at back of my mind that it might be summat much worse

Noddy, the feeling dreadful can go for a while, weeks rather than days, it's like detox as various yeasts which fed off those fermenting carbs die off (look up Herxheimer process). You can even develop rashes and fungal infections (my ds did :-o).
Then you should feel better, but beware, b/c various nutrient and enzyme deficiencies then can come to light and you might find that you react to lots of foods that you didn't before.

So you need to eat as natural and healthy diet as you can to rebuild deficiencies and hopefully fix the enzymes that break down all foods.
This is why some people think it's not worth the hassle, because you can't just get better on gf prescription stuff alone, you need basic veg and unprocessed foods as much as poss, plus probiotics and some vits/minerals (in my ds case it was Zn, B vits, omega oils etc).

Eurostar · 21/11/2010 18:16

As nightcat said, there's a kind of fight to the last process of the bad bacteria. It can also cause mental health symptoms too, depression/elation. Keep with it and it will improve

nightcat · 21/11/2010 18:18

blanche, you don't have to have gut symptoms with gluten, you can be affected in lots of other ways too (my ds was a bit extreme as his problems were mainly neurological :-o) and even celiac is about build up of suffering really, becuase even if celiac, if you don't eat wheat, you don't suffer - so why do it? Some gluten problems relate to a build up of deficiencies to the extreme - again, why suffer.

Look up gluten sensitivity, just as scary, but there are no gut tests to prove it, just diet, some drs know about it some don't.

The way I look at it is like a lifestyle choice with dr's blessing in our case, although I don't get prescriptions for my ds, just feed him fruit/veg and occasional treat.

nightcat I didn't have gut symptoms- or not serious ones, anyway. I felt varying degrees of shitty- from a bit to a lot- for 6 years (dizzy, headachy, sleepy, tummy ache after eating, bloating) but assumed it was all down to My Age/having twins

now I have a diagnosis and have packed up gluten I feel triffic

Smile
nightcat · 23/11/2010 20:20

I know, SHJ, oh, u have twins, how brill :)

I went gf to emphatise with my ds, at first I cheated a bit when out w/o him, but eventually stopped altogether.

The progress in my ds was/is miraculous, for me it's quite amazing too, I used to feel sooo tired all the time, not any more, my nails stopped falling apart too :) and the bloating's gone - now I actually have a waist!!

You know, it's so so yuck when the fashion for belt-under-your-bust came about - to cater for all that bloatiness around I reckon Hmm

snowflakes69 · 25/11/2010 10:53

I have a wheat intolerance , i avoid wheat as much as i can- when i do eat wheat my stomach bloats up really bad and i have cramps etc. i eat alternatives i.e oat products/rye however im worried now that im pregnant ill miss out on key nutrients from wheat etc.

any one have any tips? or shall i just eat wheat and put up with it?

also to those out there with symtoms they are unsure about- i was diagnosed a few years ago by a health centre by doing an allergy test. Doctors were useless they kept saying in needed more wheat!
paid about £20 and they told me my intolerences luckily no allergies. My main issues were wheat and vodka! Vodka is very common for an intolerence, i drink rum instead and i seem to be the only one on a night out who doesnt throw up. (obviously no booze whilst pregnant)

nightcat · 25/11/2010 17:53

congrats on your pregnancy and good luck too :)
ah, vodka is made from grain, makes sense then

We are wheat free (b/c of my ds), but having looked into it at lenght and in depth, I wouldn't worry in your situation if you stay wheat free. In fact you will prob get better nutrition by staying wf as much as poss, as gluten affects adversely absorption of nutrients. It also causes an immune response in the gut and can affect immunity.

At the same time, my understanding is that immune reaction is lower when pregnant (as not to reject the baby), so you might find that you won't get a severe wheat reaction now - but could still happen later, a few months after the baby is born.
Do read up on wheat and gluten, I found it fascinating and the more I found out the more resolve I had to stay off wheat.
The thing with intolerance is that if you don't have it, you are fine and don't have antibodies or any bad reaction - only when you do.
