Dairy and tomato free - what can I have with pasta???

Realise this should probably go in food or recipes but suspect there is a bit more expertise here Smile

Exclusively breastfeeding DD (4 weeks old) and after a few weeks of suspected reactions I've been advised (by HV/GP) to avoid dairy and tomato as they are thought to be the most likely culprits.

Have managed to find alternatives to the major of the dairy I usually eat but am totally lost as to what I can have with pasta which I am having major cravings for!! Confused

Anyone got any suggestions for me before I start crying.......Blush

Thanks

This is making me very hungry.

Soffritto is the word you're thinking of Freebutton! Or Mirepoix in French

Crazycatlady · 13/09/2010 12:49

Ooh, do you like broad beans?

Broad beans, pancetta, spring onion, garlic and lemon juice is divine stirred through pasta with some olive oil, or served on some toasted sourdough.

Oh I need lunch really badly now...

nickelbabe · 13/09/2010 13:02

mmmmm Flim... that sounds lovely - i'm writing it down.

FreeButtonBee · 13/09/2010 14:20

Sofritto! That's it! Thanks crazycatlady.

I am loving the sound of the broad bean and pancetta offering as well.

Careybliss · 13/09/2010 15:06

Fry some onion, garlic, pancetta

Then add pasta and a raw beaten egg and stir through. The egg will cook as it mixes with the hot pasta.

You can get dairy free parmesan at most supermarket free from sections. It looks like traditional tube packet with italian name.

Tweeze · 14/09/2010 20:47

Brocolli, garlic and chilli.

I use this as my dd is allergic to tomatoes. Luckily my mum found it posted on mumsnet in the past.
Basic sauce ingredients-
6 carrots (you can use 6 cups of butternut squash instead of carrotts for a sweeter more orange sauce-this is what I use, or try using half of each)
1 onion quatered
1 bay leaf whole
1 beet,small
1 celery stalk,sliced
1.5 cups of water

sauteed ingredients-
3 cloves of garlic,sliced
1 teaspoon dried basil or dried thyme
2 teaspoon olive oil
2 tablespoons of soy sauce (I dont use any)
1 small onion minced
1 teaspoon of dried oregano
quarter of cup of fresh parsley, chopped

Place all basic sauce ingredients in a pot and boil, covered for 30 mins. Puree in blender and add water if needed to make a tomato sauce texture.
saute garlic, onions and herbs for 5 mins in olive oil. Add parsley and saute 10 mins more.
Add to basic sauce and bring to boil. Then cover and simmer for 10 mins to blend flavours. Season if needed.

I then freeze it in ice cube trays or larger containers for noodles, pasta or just as a sauce with chips. Try it, I even make up two batches and then I dont have to do it for a long time lol. Goodluck Smile

Oh by the way, I only use butternut squash as dd has had sensitivities to carrots. You may like to experiment yourself whats nicer.

trixymalixy · 15/09/2010 12:40

When Ds couldn't have tomato I did bolognese with grated carrot and pureed cooked beetroot instead of tomatoes.

Oatly cream also good for creamy suaces.

You can buy dairy free pesto (meridian? is the brand i think) in a lot of supermarkets.

You can also buy nomato in some healthfood shops although it is getting hard to find.

Julia11841 · 22/09/2010 16:38

Hi, me and my 10-month-old-DD have been dairy free for the last 4 months. We often have the following from Sainsburys -

  • Meridian Free From Green Pesto

  • Free & Easy Dairyfree Cheese Sauce

Both are fine, not gorgeous, but they do the job! The cheese sauce is also good with fish and in lasagne.

I like pasta primavera.

You can put any new young sweet veg on and also chicken, ham or shrimp for added protein.

Woo - I forgot to come back to this thread and hadn't realised people had taken so much time to give so many answers!

Thanks all, loads to think about here and am starting to miss pasta.....Grin

May be a bit late in the day to add a comment but there are loads of things to do with pasta. I havent eaten dairy for two years now (gave it up to breast feed my daughter when she was diagnosed with dairy allergy).

Here's a couple of ideas

Pasta Bolognese - fried onions, mince meat, tbspn tomato puree, chopped tomatoed, veg stock cube, 1/4 tspn turneric, oregano, garlic, s&P,

Tuna Pasta - Fried onion, peppers (anything but green), tin of tuna, tin chopped tomatoes,
oregano

Pasta salad - pasta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, onion, olive oil S&P

Meatballs (bought or home made) in tomatoe sauce - fried onion, use same ingredients as per bolognese sauce but minus the mince

Dont use bought Pesto though as per the feeds as it contains parmesan

Also, best shop for foods without milk in them is M&S loads of their products including, biscuits, fruit breads, sweets etc.. do not have skimmed milk powder in them which most other stores products do have
