Weaning my 6 month old, and today he reacts to eggs, please help!

My little DS had quite a reaction to scrambled egg today; broke out in angry, itchy hives all over his body. Piriton calmed things down, and the GP is referring him urgently (although I suspect to a dermatologist rather than an immunologist or allergy specialist).

I'm a little anxious now about introducing foods so would welcome advice. Also, should I contact the GP tomorrow and suggest that it's an immunologist we need?

I already suspected DS might be allergic to CMP after a couple of localised reactions around his face, neck and arms, so saw the GP two days ago about this; today's reaction has resulted in him expediting the referral.

I'm imagining a horribly allergic future, please reassure me before I get too worked up!

Thanks.

You must get a prescription Epipen for his allergy. Contact a doctor.

my ds3 is cmp intollerant and has had the same reaction to egg that you describe. he got referred to a paedetriceon who then referred him to a dierician. it is hard. you can get an egg replacement prescribed so you can bake and make pancakes etc. my ds has never had an epipen - just been warned that he should not have egg again. you have to get into habit of reading all ingredients. give me a shout if you would like any more help. BTW does your dd have eczema?

sorry vlc :( Hope things aren't as you think they are

steingrims, you seem normal on this thread, do you fancy explaining your comment to emptyshell?

Definitely get the referral changed to an allergist, immunologist who deals with allergies.

You won't necessarily get/need an epipen as hives is not a life-threatening reaction, it is a mild one (however awful it looks). You should however get your doctor to prescribe a liquid antihistamine such as Piriton, which you should keep with your son at all times. If at any time he has a more serious reaction (goes floppy, swelling of tongue or airway, wheezy breathing) call an ambulance immediately.

I suggest you proceed cautiously with weaning, being careful to introduce 1 food at a time. Obviously avoid dairy and egg for now. I'd avoid introducing peanuts at all (until you see a specialist) cause egg and peanut allergy often (NOT always tho) go together.

We found out the ds1 was allergic to milk and peanuts when he was a baby. It was a v. v. stressful time but you will feel better about it over time. The good news is that milk/egg allergies are often grown out of within a few years.

i thought egg wasn't recommended before 1 year, is that just nuts?

StealthPolarBear · 28/08/2010 15:34

AFAIK it;s no soft boiled eggs under a year. Have been giving 11mo DD hard boiled eggs, scrambled and omellete since 6mo.

oh thank for that. i don't know why i though that but we adhered to my own made up rule til ds was 13 months Grin
