Did an egg challenge this week...

...with dd2 9mths. We have been dairy, soy, wheat/gluten, egg & nut-free since Christmas and were due to see the gastro last week. Our appointment was deferred until October Hmm so I phoned the dietician for advice and she suggested doing full-on challenges, starting with the least likely suspects. I didn't fancy giving her nuts, so egg it was.

We started on day 1 with the top of dd1's hard boiled egg, and on day 2 and 3 she got a whole egg. Symptom-spotting has been complicated by the arrival of a virus on day 3 which gave her a high temp and rash, so I'm not sure what might have preceded those symptoms. But I think that we are dealing with: swollen puffy eyes/face, temporary red spots around mouth, weeping eye, bloating, grumpy, possibly a bit snotty and coughy.

In all, thankfully not anaphylaxis. Hoorah. So are we dealing with an intolerance that is hopefully on its way out? I'm secretly hoping I can start eating cake soon...

im sorry, is this a hospital egg challenge or home one?

swollen puffy eyes , /face/ red spots around mouth, etc, dont soulnd like intolerance to me.

what led the doctor to think this was a intolerance reaction?

hobnob, I second that. Puffy eyes and face is not good - stay away from egg until you have seen an allergy specialist. Ask for a referral. A dietitian is perhaps not the best person to be recommending home food challenges. Have you got antihistamine in the house?

When you say 'red spots' do you mean like skin welts?
My DS gets red welts around his mouth if he has egg (eg omelette) and I assumed it was an intolerance as it goes if he has no more egg (after a few hours).

It was a home challenge, and the red spots were tiny and went away pretty quickly. I'm assuming it's not an allergy since there were no breathing issues, etc. I'll call the dietician and let her know how it went this week. Since we're under the gastro I don't think we'll get to see an allergist Sad. Not sure exactly what that would achieve actually. I'd love to have her tested just so I know for sure what to avoid, etc. But she is generally fine now apart from some bloating episodes and it can all be dealt with. And even if she did test positive for something then that may not necessarily last long?

I'm having a hard time of making sense how to deal with all this, can you tell? Hmm

An allergy is a reaction associated with the immune system. Allergic reactions can be relatively mild (e.g. aggravates eczema, hives, rash) or severe (anaphylaxis) or anywhere in between. However reactions often worsen with each exposure and so exposure to any allergen should be avoided.

Intolerances are associated with the gut and digestive system.

I would hold off doing any challenges unless under medical supervision. At the very least its wise to start with baked egg/ dairy/ soya and touching small amounts on the skin.
