Dd reacted to something today at nursery- but what?

Dd2 (16mo)is allergic to dairy and egg.

She had her breakfast at home and fruit for a snack at around 9 (apple, pear and banana, all of which she has had many many times).

At 11.30 she had hives on her back. She was given Piriton. She had lunch (brought in by me - spag bol- homemade and had many times) and then they said she had hives around her mouth (about 5) and then many around her neck with a red rash - (which I saw when I arrived to pick her up)

They all subsided with the single dose of Piriton and she had a longish sleep and a massive loose poo (sorry if tmi) and has been fine.

Nursery are really switched on and I trust them. They were at a loss as to what it could be.

They said some of the children had been baking but had been wiped down before coming back into the room. This is the only thing I can think of- that perhaps some mixture had been accidentally brought back and dd accidentally ingested it.

Am I missing something? Does anyone have any ideas?

Weird that there was more than one incident. Could there have been something in the room? I don't know... an old stash of chocolate buttons under a chest of drawers or something? Or yoghurt / milky baby-sick on one of the toys? Could somebody have spilled something on her clothes? Did they have a new brand of playdough / soap / anything else she could have touched or ingested.

Sounds really baffling. Hope you figure it out.

Thanks for the reply greenbananas- I didn't explain that very well, it was all one incident but it started before lunch with a few hives on her back followed by more around her mouth during lunch.

I have taken her in today and my heart is in my mouth (although she has been going for 6months without and incident) as theirs are!

The nursery are scrupulous with cleaning down after meals and all snacks are at the table but maybe there could be milky baby sick on clothes. The symptoms seem to suggest she actaully ate something (with the poo as well) but who knows.

Thanks again- I'll see how today goes

Sometimes they develop new intolerances eg, the banana or apple, I get reactions to banana.

Whelk · 13/08/2010 10:39

Oh god I hope its not something new Sad

Ah sorry, yes, reading your post again, I see what you mean - and yes, the poo does suggest that she ate something. Hope all goes well today and that they get to the bottom of it.

Thanks again- no incidents today and just about to go and collect her.

glad it was okay

Me again- it happened again today! Hives on her neck which setteld easily with piriton.

They hadn't been baking today. the only thing we can think of is something on the bib ?? Hmm

They are cotton and pvc and soaked in Milton and washed by hand.

But she has used them without problem for 6 mmonths and nothing has changed.

I'm going to bring in her own bibs and feeding utensils.

Any ideas anyone?

Oh dear Sad that's not good.

Is it just her neck? Are any other parts of her body exposed (e.g. is she wearing short sleeves or a dress?)

I know you said the staff are really switched on but is there anyone new? A student? Maybe someone that isn't aware of the need for handwashing etc. (I've covered for staff sickness in nurseries and other settings where nobody told me which children had allergies.)

Do the children wash their hands after snack as well as before? Could one of the other children have been giving your DD big slobbery kisses?

I know I'm clutching at straws. Hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Whelk · 19/08/2010 08:49

Thanks greenbananas its good to have someone else clutching at straws.

She wears minimal clothing - sort of sundresses to nursery as it is unfeasibly hot there and she is very prones to heat rash.

The worst of it was on her neck although there were a few hives on her tummy.

There wasn't anyone new yesterday I don't think but will check.

Was there anything that she ate last thursday that she ate again yesterday? I'd keep a diary just in case she has become intolerant to something new.

Also, ask if staff are washing hands after lunch. Mealtimes with babies/toddlers is a messy business. However if your DD has been fine for 6 months in nursery, I would suspect they are pretty clued up, as you have said.
