Advice needed for lactose intollerance please

Hi

My 14 month old has just been diagnosed with lactose intollerance. We think she has developed it after having gastroeneteritis.

I've been prescribed SMA Wysoy and she is taking that fine.

My question is can anyone recommend any good foods to be feeding her to try and make up for the lack of cheese, yogurts etc? When I asked my GP she just laughed and shrugged Hmm

My other slight concern is that she now weighs less than she did at 9 months old and has dropped form the 75th percentile to under the 25th, I'm sure the weight will come back on now she's keeping some milk down and the diarreha seems to be ceasing but just want to make sure I'm feeding her the best things so would love any advice from you mums that are used to dealing with this, thanks.

You can get soya yogurts and also goats and sheep ones she may be able to have the soya one will defiantly be ok. Green veg like broccoli are a really good source of calcium.

Swedish glacé ice cream is also dairy free and it is really yummy. If she can have goat products she could have goats cheese which will make you life easier. Good heath food shop sometimes stock a dairy free cheese spread. Food that I have found contain milk are ham, tomato sauce, light mayonnaise, some brands of dark chocolate and bread there are others but I forget which ones surprised me now it tends to be in the cheaper products.

A fun desert that we like is dark chocolate fondue with chopped up fruit and marsh mallows
Another tip is to walk down the free from or healthy eating isle in the supermarket it has lots of nice things.

Both my dd1 and my DH are dairy intolerant and although it is difficult to start with, it does become (much) easier with time. The hardest stuff for us is eating out as a family.

Initially in the early days I made most things, incl bread (which mostly has some dairy in).

Really it depends on what your daughter can tolerate. Both dh and dd can tolerate goat's milk so we use alot of goats cheese (we do spurge on the st helen's farm one in tesco as it is less strong, more cheddar like, for dd). We can also use pecorino Sheep cheese) instead of parmesan and goat yogurt.

During the summer dd has sorbet instead of icecream (or an icelolly). I have discovered that tesco value borbons have no dairy in (although at 14 months you proably wouldn't want her anywhere near).

DD also loves alpro soya yogurts (and dd2 who needs a high fat diet prefers them as well!).

I hope you've been advised what to look for on packaging with regard to the different forms of milk, whey etc

good luck

Yeah you can also make a nice custard with soya, rice or oat milk (take care with buying cheap soya though it doesn't taste nice and is environmentally unsound). Just put double the powder in than usual.

DH uses a lot of these products and finds them pretty much like normal dairy in taste.

my DD now 2.6 is lactose intolerant too (diagnosed at 8mths) but did develop a problem later on with soya (and now intolerant to that too Sad)so you might want to go easy on the soya for a bit Sad

((by that I mean the alpro yogurts etc not her formula obviously))

You can buy chocolate puddings made with rice milk at dietary needs direct (online) which my DD loves.

Have you not been referred to a dietician??

Thanks guys. No not been reffered to see a diatician. Like I say my |GP just laughed when I asked about alternative foods for yogurts and cheese!

Think I will try the goats cheese and the alpo yogurts when I'm sure she's settled down. Sorry if TMI but DD did her first solid poo yesterday in over 3 weeks so the Wysoy formula seems to be agreeing with her, yey :-)

Thanks for the link limacharlie I have submitted a request form and the site will find where my nearest stockists are for my area.

They did say it could be temporary and that many children grow out of it by age 3. No not heard about lactose reduced milk. GP did say that whenher tum has calmed down to try her with the odd bit of cheese or the odd milky button, or she said I may give her something by accident and I'll should soon get to pick up on what she can and can't tollerate. Thanks for the advice
