Anyone know of any brands of celery free stock cubes and/or tomato ketchup (she asks hopefully)?

no but does tomato ketchup have celery in it??

Reason I ask is ds is allergic but its not the tomatoes and celery allergy is on the increase isn't it??

wb · 08/08/2010 11:36

Heinz ketchup has celery/celery extract in it, and ds1 now reacts to that (albeit in the mildest of ways).

We were told by the allergy clinic that celery allergy was very rare in children but, having said that, there are several mums on here whose lo have it.

Marmite has celery in it too, by the way.

oxo beef stock cubes are okay.

You'd be amazed at what has celery in it. Check the labels.
I posted a few months ago after visiting MacD's and being amazed at how a lot of the menu was not suitable for those allergic to celery. You can ask in store for their allergy leaflet.

I thought celery was actually becoming quite high up the lists of childhood allergy now - it seems to be more common, certainly.

Celery salt/extract is in an awful lot of things.

seems it's more common in other European countries

babybarrister - we are avoiding fennel and celeriac on a just in case basis. Before this allergy arrived he had eaten celeriac but never really liked it, fennel he has never tried.

Actually, yesterday he said tarragon made his mouth 'hot' so I need to see if that is related to fennel.

Thanks for the info everyone.

is celery part of OAS??

wb · 08/08/2010 18:15

Celery can cause OAS mumbar, but also more serious reactions right up to anaphalaxis. In ds1 case his reactions are , so far, mild, but include burning mouth/throat and hives all over face and neck.

OP posts:

babybarrister - we get that too. He's allergic to celery. Then we are told that's not too bad cause it tastes awful anyway (true imo) but until you look you have no idea how many things the dam stuff is in.

the organic stock cube mentioned above may be buorbillion or something like that anyway can't actually remember its name but its in a green carton if that helps.

WB that is exactly what ds has. He had a reaction once to ketchup - sore burn looking skin so avioded it for 2 years. Then he had it a friends and was ok so I gave him some at home and he had quite a severe reaction. Very distreesed hives around mouth swollen eyes and very thirsty saying his neck was sore. RAST test to tomato and peanut clear and general IgE ok. This summer he has been suffering quite badly with hayfever getting very sore and swollen eyes and hives around the mouth complaining of sore mouth and clutching his throat at times. He has also had a similar reation to an apple although since that he has been fine. Also hayfever has subsided at the minute. Some wise mner on here mentioned OAS and now I'm wondering if its something in the ketchup causing OAS - perhaps the celery???

How did your ds get his celery allergy diagnosed?

Incidentally does your ds get a sore patch of skin that looks like impetigo and does his reaction stem from this becomming red and inflamed - this is almost a warning for me.

Sorry for the long post.

Ds had a reaction to a risotto plus fish meal I made last year - from that he had skin prick/blood tests for celery and halibut allergy but both negative (as was a food challenge to halibut). So we figured it was a case of peanut contamination of the stock cube which was a brand we hadn't tried before (we already knew he was allergic to peanuts).

Then a few months ago I cooked a stew with a few bits of celery in and he said his tongue was tingly after eating it, and got 1 hive. Since then he has said his mouth has been hot on several occasions and had odd hives after eating and eventually we realised this happens every time he has anything with celery extract in (except marmite which he seems to tolerate).

We have another appointment at the allergy clinic on Christmas eve (!) to retest but I'm convinced now that's what it is. He has a history of false negatives for skin prick tests and it is a v. mild allergy so I guess that's why it didn't show up.

Ds doesn't (yet at least) have hayfever and the first indication of a problem with him are definitely oral (burning sensation) rather than skin, which comes later. With me however my early warning allergy symptom is v. itchy skin on my neck -this heralds an asthma attack - so I guess it varies from person to person.

Wrt to son, perhaps the ketchup he had at his friends was a celery free variety?

yes I get the mummy look in my mouth its sore etc. Think that I may start recording what he's eating each day and complaints etc and see if I can break it down and then get re referred to allergist. Thanks for help.
