not sure if ds allergic to egg

11 month old ds is gluten and dairy free due to colitis. I'm not sure about eggs. I've tried boiled egg yolks a few times and he has thrown up pretty soon after eating them, so i guessed he must be intolerant. But then last night he had some gluten free bread which i didn't realise had dried egg white in it, and today he seems fine, no vomiting. I thought egg white was more allergenic than yolk, so should i still cut it out or should i try egg yolk again? its a shame on such a limited diet that he can't have eggs either, so full of nutrients..any feedback gratefully received..

we suspect that ds is allergic to egg. He seemed fine on it (like your ds he has trace of egg in food) then one day I gave him an omlette and he has a bad reaction. The doctor said it was because it was pure egg.

My doctor sent us to the hospital for a blood test that will determine if he is allergic or not, so this can prove it one way or another (waiting for the results at the moment).

we haven't had any blood tests for anything - will mention it next time i see the paed. how did his bad reaction show itself emily05?

ruty - it has taken us 2 years for my doctor to finally send him for a blood test!
He gets hives, swollen eyelids and runny nose.
Definantly talk to your paed about this and dont give up until they refer you.

Ruty, if your child is already allergic or intolerant to other foods it would be worth it not to introduce egg until he is at least 12 months old (according to the guidelines) but TBH, we introduced it at 18m and still got problems, the reactions can be different for each child, mine gets a rash.

thanks you two, yes i guess i better avoid it.

I know a little boy who gets an asthma attack if he has anything containing egg.

Chandra · 24/08/2005 23:57

Ruty, don't worry too much about avoiding egg, is not difficult at all, specially after you have been avoiding glutten and dairy. And who knows, maybe if you reintroduce it in a few months time he will be fine.

just know egg is good for the brain

Give him oily fish instead and that even better

tatt · 25/08/2005 14:19

unfortunately fish is another one of those things that's supposed to wait until after 12 months if the child has allergies Ruty you could try the hospital method of testing, depends how confident you feel about handling an allergic reaction if he had one.

If you wanted to try rub a little egg (and yes white is supposed to be more allergenic than yolk) on the skin of his arm or back. Any sign of a rash forget it. If there's no reaction put a bit on the skin of his face. If there's still no reaction put a tiny amount under his lip. Still no reaction and he can try eating some. This is how a hospital does food challenges but of course they do have full facilities if anything goes wrong.

Also not sure if ds allergic to eggs, always had loose nappies but doc said not to worry as weight fine. No other allergies but slight eczema, first go at scrambled egg at 9 months resulted in projectile vomit and chronic diorhea. tried on cake at later date as nursery need to know if he can have egg in food and this made him vomit Is it worth trying to have more formal tests before he has mmr??

edam · 25/11/2005 14:22

By the way, if your ds is allergic to egg, you might want to check whether he can have MMR. The mumps vaccine is cultured on chick embryos so you can't have it if you are allergic to eggs. You could have single measles and rubella instead.

My ds (2) seems to have problems with egg although not a full-blown allergy - when he was as little as yours scrambled egg made him vomit. We tried a couple of times to make sure it was egg rather than anything else and got same reaction every time (although no hives, swelling or runny nose). He's been fine with cakes and other egg-containing food, just eggs on their own seem to be a problem. Have been trying again recently as he's having single vaccines so need to know before he has mumps. He seemed fine after one try, but got a spotty face after another (but then he does have eczema so could have been that), so I'm really not sure. May try the egg on skin just to work it out.

My ds is allergic to eggs and had the mmr. We are in Australia and his allergist advised it is not one that needs to be avoided. Not sure if same for you. He cannot have flu needle or another injection that was not relevant to us so can't remember!!
