DS1 talking about fuzzy lips after eating Lea & perrins

I put a splash in a big pot of macaroni cheese tonight. DS1 didn't see me do it, but he complained of "fuzzy lips" and wouldn't eat it. He normally eats the lot.

I reckon he probably just didn't like the different taste, but given that he's an allergic child (just recently outgrown egg allergy) I can't dismiss the fact that he might be allergic to something in it. Looking at the ingredients, my money would be on anchovies if it's not just fussiness.

There is no way on this earth he would ever eat an anchovy, so does anybody know of any foods that have anchovies as an ingredient that I might be able to try him with?

It could of course just be that Lea & Perrins is quite tangy which gave him fuzzy lips. I hope so, but I would like to find out.

I am allergic to the nightshade family. Tomato, potato, sweet peppers aubergine and chilli peppers, I always react to Lea and Perrins. even a splash. Its strong stuff. maybe the anchovies but lots of other possibilities.

Gosh, I never thought of the vinegar BeerTricksPotter.

minimammoth - I wonder if there's chilli in it. There is a very vague mention of "flavouring" on the ingredients list.

Now I think about this more, I am sure he has had bolognaise and burgers etc where I have added Lea & Perrins. I will have to try it again and see if he has any probs.

If he doesn't, then I can dismiss it as a dislike rather than an allergy.

What about fish generally, can he eat other types of fish? - I have fish allergy, can't eat L&P because of this. There is one type of pre-pack fresh stuffed pasta has anchovy in it (I found out the hard way!!) Sainsbury's I think but may be Tescos, I've just had a look at their online sites but can't find it. Otherwise look at some of the higher-end tomato based pasta sauces, perhaps also M&S jars I've noticed sometimes have anchovy as an ingredient.

By cooking the anchovies for a longer time and at higher temps (by baking or frying temps will be much higher than with simmering) any allergens may be denatured, so this may be why he managed L&P in a burger but not sauce.

Hopefully it's just the spiciness causing tingling...

Thanks for your reply BubsMaw. He is ok with fish. Just as well really the amount of fish fingers he gets through!

The more I think about this, the more I do think it was just the spicyness, but he must be super sensitive because there was so little in the sauce. He did detect the tiniest smear of butter on a sandwich today. I forgot he doesn't like it on sandwiches so scraped it off and he still noticed! He was so hungry that he ate it anyway....

Interesting post.

Ds1 is allergic to peanuts and celery. He is also super-sensitive to chilli, to the point where I worry that he is developing an allergy to that too (my mum is allergic to chillis).

However, although he complains of the burning feeling anything remotely spicy gives him in his mouth, these instances never give him hives (with celery he not only gets a burning / tingling feeling but hives all over his face). So I think that he hates spicy food cause the burning feeling is similar to the sensations he gets when he has an allergic reaction, not because it is one iyswim.
