GLP-1 has turned me into a ‘normal’ drinker

I’ve been taking mounjaro for a few weeks now. One of my main motivations was what I had heard about its impact on people’s drinking. I don’t drink every day but I do drink too much and I think about how much I am going to drink a lot. I don’t have ‘food noise’, I have ‘alcohol noise’ and it’s gone. I have had a drink (when it’s been offered to me) but I’m genuinely ambivalent. It’s amazing. I don’t want to stay on MJ just to control my drinking but I’m so relieved that there is something that exists which can take away my preoccupation with booze.

I am assuming it will come back when I stop but I wondered if there is any ‘learning’ going on in my brain given I am clearly not being rewarded by drink in the same way. Has anyone been on WLIs and found they drink less when they come off them?

I’m going to post this on the WLI board too so apols if you are seeing a duplicate.

I have had one bottle of wine in my fridge for a week. I still get that craving for it, but can only manage a small glass a day. Normal me, and an open bottle is going to be gone that night.

I think it doesn't quite taste the same, I get pissed far far quicker, and I kinda get over the taste after a few mouthfuls. Its a bit annoying because I want to get pissed, but I really can't. Which I know is a marvellous thing really, but the desire to get pissed is still there.

What an amazing drug it is hey!

It also has a massive positive effect on my ADHD as well. Less racy brain so thats good.

Hmmm, That’s interesting! I have a sort of fleeting desire to get pissed but I’m not remotely committed and have only had a couple of small beers on any one eve. Being long drinks I can’t really face the volume either.

I find the lack of thinking about alcohol the most amazing thing. It’s just gone from my mind.

I’ve actually had a few stressful situations where I would normally lean on booze and I’ve actually felt a bit down about the fact I can’t do that. Obviously it’s a good thing but I miss the escapism (which is the unhealthy part of my drinking) and hence I wonder if my brain might be benefiting from this (ie the learning) beyond its the effect of the drug itself. Time will tell I guess

It’s had the same effect on me, Although I'm on wegovy. I suspect a lot of my fat is from wine as I eat well so it should be having double benefits!

Yeah definitely! without the booze I can maintain a pretty good diet but the alcohol calories plus the extra snacks when I’m drinking and bad food choices the next day make it tough to lose weight.

100%

I actually gave up drinking all together for five years and felt so much better (and thinner!) but it creeps back in, doesn’t it.

Stupidity combined with a really stressful situation

Hi @moderateme just to say there is actually a 'GLP-1 for alcohol', its called Naltrexone. If you're primarily taking mounjaro to reduce alcohol consumption it might be worth considering, as you only take it on days your planning to drink, so you don't have to worry about what happens when you reach your target weight. Its not that well known, but its worked really well for me, and as a bonus its cheaper too! I started it about 6 months ago, and I have lost weight, even though that was never my intention, I think because I'm not getting all those empty alcohol calories any more. Come join us on the 'Anyone on or starting a naltrexone journey?' chat on this board if you're curious!

Anyone on or starting a naltrexone journey? | Mumsnet

I'm hoping to start naltrexone next week, I'm nervous but excited to get started. Anyone else on the journey and wants to share?

Thank you! Funnily enough I’ve just downloaded an audio book about naltrexone. Sounds like this good be a good option for the longer term
