Naltrexone

Has anyone found a way to get naltrexone without paying for an expensive subscription-type programme? I don't really feel the need for counselling etc. as per the Sinclair Method, though I suppose it couldn't hurt. Apparently naltrexone is out of patent so in theory it shouldn't be expensive on its own.

Isn’t it prescription only? It sounds as if you could really do with some help in getting clean.

There isn’t, or shouldn’t, be a way you can just buy it because it isn’t risk free & isn’t for everyone, you can’t just go buy it. Have a chat with your GP, or if you’d prefer to go private then that way, and if it is deemed to be appropriate for you then you can get it that way.

If you’re at the point of needing this medication then you really do need help OP.

I have no experience of that medication I'm afraid but I did want to say that I would add in counselling, therapy or some other support into whatever plan you're going to do. I absolutely know you didn't ask for advice though and respect your right not to read. Good luck with your recovery and I wish you all the best. 💪

I'm happy to go through my GP, but from what I've read GPs aren't keen to prescribe it without counselling, because that is what the NICE guidelines recommend. I can try it I suppose and see what they say, I just suspect they'll dismiss me because I am not a really heavy drinker. I just thought I'd see what other ways there might be.

It's usually via specialist services rather than GP if you would like it via NHS - look up your drug and alcohol service as in most areas that will be who prescribes. May be different in small pockets of the country, but generally CCGs don't fund it in primary care.
Also keeping in mind that there is currently a national shortage of Naltrexone so it might be tricky to get hold of.

Yes, they will be in line with NICE guidelines and those guidelines are in place for very good reason.

If you need the help then absolutely get it, but you can’t pick and choose which parts you want.

It is a prescribed drug, any “other ways” would not be legal or safe.

It’s likely it would need to be started by specialist services, I’m not sure a GP and initiate it.

The Gp would also follow NICE guidelines - they’re there for a very good reason

Why don’t you want the talking therapy that’s recommended
