Reaction to alcohol

I am a binge drinker two nights a week. Last night I had 9 drinks (wine and beer) between 7pm and 12pm. I had a steak dinner at 8pm. This would be a usual amount for me to drink if not more.

When I got home I had never felt so drunk in all my life. I could barely walk up the stairs, I fell
onto the bed and could not get up again on my own. This led to vomiting and shaking uncontrollably, I was on the bathroom floor and could not get up falling in and out of consciousness.

My husband was convinced my drink had been spiked and took me to A and E. Bloods came back clear but with alcohol level of 1000.

I have never been like that and if has scared me to death and the what ifs - if my husband hadn’t be at home to look after me. Was a this alcohol poisoning?? Going to try and give up drinking for good.

Kids are 15 and 18 so not young. Husband up early to take 15 to sports. We got a lift to A and E.

Massive wake up call - Day 1 starts today.

He had similar to you, a bottle or more of wine and a couple of pints, then got up early to take your child somewhere?

It sounds like excessive drinking has become so normalised in your home that things like driving over the limit aren’t a concern any more. He’ll absolutely have been over the limit this morning if he drove.

Have either of you got a history of alcoholism in the family? I wonder whether it’s become normalised as I say and that’s skewing your take on what an effect it’s having on you in a variety of ways.

Im not teetotal by the way, I just think that this kind of drinking in family homes is damaging to kids and something that needs addressing asap, especially as they are now teens so are presumably exploring / about to explore the world of drinking and have a blueprint that is very unhealthy.

Would you consider chatting to your GP to get a reality check about the physical impact? It might help scare you straight for want of a better term!

Hopefully not from your 18 year old with two utterly trashed parents in the back seats!

There are some really good, non judgemental supportive threads on here OP, with posters who are all looking to reduce their intake or quit all together. I suggest you jump on board! 😊

One and a half bottles of wine and two pints of beer is around 19 units. My tolerance to alcohol dropped massively when I became peri menopausal around my early forties so perhaps this is happening to you. It’s good you recognise it and are keen to massively cut down or stop. You’ll feel soooo much better for it. Good luck.

I could have put that away in my 20s easily but now I’m also 42 I rarely drink and when I do a glass or two of wine and the next day may as well be written off and I don’t even feel the same affect, I’m just really tired and off to bed early.
It almost definitely is your age and your body can’t cope like it used to.
You get used to not drinking but you’ll find it hard at first but I’d definitely listen to what your body is trying to tell you.

Update - haven’t had a drink from this incident. Feel amazing! Who knew sobriety could be so good 😊

That’s really good news - well done. Your body and mind will really be thanking you!
