Alcoholic Father

My dad has always had a drink problem, but the last 5 plus years it’s gotten extremely bad, 3/4 bottles of wine a day, he’s only 66. We managed to get him to the drs two weeks ago as he looks awful and slightly yellow. The GP did bloods and said to him he has the same blood results as someone with 1/8 of a liver left. He says he wants to stop and the GP said it has to be cold turkey and started him on setraline also, it’s been almost 2 weeks and he’s coping ok, sleeping lots, being sick etc. yesterday he was given diazepam to help. But he’s really not eating (I’m not surprised) but the amount of weight he’s lost so fast is extreme and his eyes are so sunken in his head he looks “terminal” we are doing everything we can to love and support him but I’m terrified it’s too late and the reason he looks so poorly is because internally something worse is happening.

Stopping alcohol as suddenly as the GP has suggested can be very dangerous. I suggest asking for an urgent referral to an alcohol/addiction support service.

Will his GP be open in the morning? Failing that 111 or speak to the pharmacist. What's his favourite food. Ask him what he can manage.

He’s saying he can’t really eat yet. No, no drs open tomorrow.

I would bring him to A&E urgently it sounds like he is in a bad way

Icecreamhelps · 01/08/2025 23:47

Only go to A&E at this time of night if he is need of urgent care. I speak from experience. He understand he can't eat, can he try some broth or super noodles. Small amounts he doesn't need to eat a full meal. Keep him hydrated. I'm so sorry your dad is experiencing this I've been there with my dad. Get through the weekend and try the GP your dad needs to be engaged and want help. I wish you all well.

Are you in the UK? That is frankly life threatening advice from the GP. Do you have a community drug and alcohol service or can you afford a BUPA / whoever call?

Mrs777 · 02/08/2025 15:08

We called 111 they said to carry on as along as he’s drinking water etc, we’ve emailed the councillor number at the start of this still awaiting their reply.
