Sinclair method?

Has anyone used the Sinclair method (naltrexone) to stop drinking?

Im considering signing up here: http://www.sinclairmethoduk.com/ as I really need to stop drinking but I just can’t seem to stop, despite being away from the triggers that started me drinking in the first place.

I’ve tried the local nhs alcohol service, they weren’t much help tbh.

Hi there, no personal direct experience but my mother a alcoholic of nearly 30years has not tried.
She did try
➤ Disulfiram (brand name: Antabuse)
But of course she didn't want to stop drinking, so would just fake taking them & drink anyway.
I guess if you have the psychological attitude that you want to stop/cut down then maybe worth a try. This is a great place to start & just wanted to say I think it's fantastic you are taking control & I hope you have all the support around you need.

Can you not get naltrexone prescribed by a NHS dr?
Im sure you can get Antabuse as mentioned above on NHS

I haven’t tried the Sinclair Method, though it does work for some people.

One thing I would caution though is to pair it with support groups, AA, a sober coach, talking therapy, something besides meds.

Because getting sober isn’t just not wanting to drink. In fact, I’d say it’s only about 20% not drinking. The other 80% is re-learning how to live life without being numb and running away. Triggers will always be everywhere. You will have to be around alcohol in life, and drunk people. Bad things will happen to you and you will just want to escape. You have to learn how to live through that without booze.

Taking a pill can get you started, but you need to pair it with all the work on yourself too and learning how to sit with your emotions and figuring out a new way to live. You will need support for that and it helps to have people who have done it before to help you along the way.

Yes, I've done it and its been life changing.

Would really recommend you sign up with Rethink Drink though. They are amazing and will offer you lots of support along the way, whether you want to stop drinking entirely or just drink moderately.

My partner has stopped drinking using the Sinclair Method
Absolutely life changing.

To the poster who asked about getting Naltrexone on nhs...rarely you'll find a GP who will prescribe it but they often just say one a day whereas you follow a different dosing protocol on TSM.

My partner didn't use any other therapy or program alongside taking the meds. It worked brilliantly for him but he followed to the letter taking it 1.5 hours before a drink.
Now he has reached a point he just doesn't drink alcohol at all. That doesn't mean he doesn't sometimes fancy a drink but there's no battle to decide no, he won't drink.
I'm super proud of him.

Great to hear. I asked GP today for my mum and she knew nothing. Said have to go through drug and alcohol services. Mum doesn't want to stop drinking but she is killing herself and my soul with it. 😭

I'm on naltrexone. I went through the drug/alcohol service as my GP couldn't or wouldn't prescribe it.

You still need willpower but it helps a lot. There does seem to be a general shortage of it on the NHS though. I had to try numerous pharmacies, none of them had it or were able to order it in, including Boots. Eventually found one some distance away so I need to travel there once a month to collect it.

Hope it works for you! Got my mum back into drug and alchol services but not sure she is ready to engage still. It's causing me such anxiety. I know I am not responsible for her but wish she would take some help.

ohthejoysoftoddler · 22/08/2025 21:00

I am starting naltrexone soon, I'd be glad to have someone to chat to on this journey.
