Hello all
I am looking for a bit of advice and support as I’m too ashamed to tell my family. I’ve been drinking way too much lately. Won’t go in to the in’s and outs but mainly a rough break up. It spiralled a bit. Anyway I’ve had my gamma results of 102. Is there anything I can do myself (obviously abstain) without having to go to the Drs. I’m so worried I’ve damaged my liver and it’s irreversible. Can I reverse anything by not drinking?
Any advice greatly appreciated as I’m slightly bricking it right now and so worried.
Thank you 🙏

I don’t know for sure but I’m pretty sure your liver will mend itself- given time and no booze obviously. I seem to think milk thistle is good? There will be loads on mr google.
im glad you wrote this post - im drinking half a bottle a night and have been for ages- im suddenly realising- years, so your post is valuable to me , thank you for sharing. Am about to google hang on.

Lemon juice (diluted in water) in the morning is good for your liver

Try to stay off the booze, seek professional help and or support for your MH if you think you need, or if you wish. Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, get fresh air and the exercise that brings you pleasure. Good luck!

Thank you so much for replying! I have literally sat on google all night and diagnosed myself with awful things. I will try those things you’ve said and obviously give my body a major rest from any form of alcohol. I think it has been a bit of a wake up call. Because I still worked every day and looked after the family I didn’t realise how destructive it has been to my body. Thank you 🙏

Hi OP - what did the doc say when you got the results. I guess that's the best place to start.
Have they ordered more tests? I imagine if it's looking like it could be serious they'd want to do a scan to check.
In the meantime I'd obviously abstain - I saw you've joined us on the alcohol free life thread which is great - eat lots of fruit and veg and fibre, do some moderate exercise, give up smoking if you do and probably try and eat the sort of diet you'd eat if you had high cholesterol. I think coffee can be good for the liver (that does sound contrary so maybe do your own research) but it needs to be either filter coffee or instant because otherwise it can increase your cholesterol which is bad for the liver too.
For most liver injuries your body will heal the damage if you abstain. Obviously not always but if you've no symptoms I'm sure that would be more likely to be the case for you.
Good luck x

Hello
I didn’t have the blood test done at the Drs, it was at a private place x

Abstain completely and your gamma level will come down. Can you have another test in 4-6 months time.

Lmlrts · 06/12/2024 18:12

Thank you x oh I absolutely will. It has scared me. Yes I will have another test in a few months x

A few years back I had a drink problem and I was fortunate enough to get these blood tests done where I worked. Honestly it will come down pretty quick if you stick to it. If you don't mind me asking, are you managing to abstain at moment? Well done if you can, I know how difficult it is.

Hello
Thanks so much for your reply! Yes I am. My problem wasn’t so much drinking everyday but drinking too much when I did drink x

I think you should definitely have another test after abstaining for a few months. Hopefully it will put your mind at rest because it will have come down. But just on case something else is going on.

OP, I had a Gamma test in December 2023 and my result was exactly the same as yours - 102.
After abstaining from alcohol I received my most recent result yesterday and it was at 32. Not perfect, but then again I only cut back to basically zero alcohol four months ago.
The liver and the way it operates can vary so much from person to person, but 102 is by no means a disaster and you can reverse the damage you have done with a bit of time and care. Good luck.
