I've researched and signed up to the Sinclair method this weekend. I'm scared, but desperate after years of drinking and knowing I can't abstain, each year I just get worse, I know I can't get better, or at least I can't see it, it's been more than 10years now. I've just sent £449 to a Joanna from Sinclair. The trust pilot review look good. But I have to wait 5-7 days for them to contact me. Worried but desperate... Anyone had success?

@TheMauveCrow thanks for your update. Do you still take naltrexone (how many milligrams btw) on drinking days or have you stopped taking it now?

Well done on your success

I've started the Sinclair Method a week or so ago and it's mostly going well in that I've cut right down, just having a 1/2 glass of wine after taking the medication to try to retrain my brain. But I'm having some unpleasant side effects although I'm only taking half a tablet - I feel quite anxious on it and for the first couple of days cried a lot and even had thoughts of self harm although luckily those went away. Also struggled to go to sleep although that, too, has gotten better. Although I think the meds are also stifling my enjoyment of food as well as drink, which is slightly unfortunate as it makes everything feel a bit flat.

I'm slightly going against the advice though by allowing myself one day a week on Saturday when I have a couple of glasses of wine and don't take the pill. I feel the need for some sort of joy in my life, as long as it's in a managed way. So far this is working fine and I'm sticking to the method at all other times. Please don't judge if you reply - I'm doing the best I can and what seems to work for me.

@incidentally how is this method working for you? I'm 18months in now, I love it, I'm a different person in that i don't drink hardly, just occasions or holidays now. It's what I wished for for so long so I'm going to stick at it, I do miss the joy from drinking though and I guess I am still happy, it's just that giddyness etc I miss I guess. I will stick with it but it means the tablets are for life and that does feel a long time!

My partner started TSM in summer of 2024. He now hasn't had a single drop of alcohol since early December 2024.
He has no desire to drink at all, so he has reached the pharmacological extinction that TSM talks about.
He doesn't miss drinking alcohol in any way and doesn't think about the buzz etc.
It has worked really well for him but he followed the plan religiously...you have to to retrain the brain.

It's working OK. I've had a few lapses but overall it's working. Most days I have just one glass and feel really good the next morning. So I'm going to stick to it as long as I need to. I'll see how it goes but it may be that my long-term goal is moderation rather than complete abstinence. Really glad it's worked so well for you!

Yes.

Meant to add that the anxiety and sleeplessness abated after about a week so no side effects to speak of anymore. The initial super-effectiveness of the medication also lessened somewhat, and I've had a few instances where I've overindulged on my favourite wine, but mostly I stick to one glass and don't really want any more. I changed my mind about the plan of having one day a week off the med - there's no point really. I take it every day and try my best, and it's working well.

Didn’t work for me . Made me so so depressed to be honest as it flattens your mood and my drinking escalated as I ended up drinking everyday to try and cure myself quicker (didn’t work) . Waste of money but I love that it’s a life saver for some people . Didn’t get any support from Sinclair method either after initial consultation

kohlrabislaw · 20/05/2026 08:39

Rethink Drink will do an initial free consultation. Also they don’t just cut you off after the months you paid for. You continue to be able to get the meds through them.

I thought rethink drink were very good , my son didn’t stick with it but that was down to him not them
