Raised Serum GGT

Just wondered if anyone has experienced raised serum ggt of over 300 in a blood test and what was the result? Worried about DH but he is a heavy drinker. Thanks.

Mine was around 150, which is still quite high. I was drinking 3 bottles of wine a day at that point. Was this done by a doctor? What have they advised him? It should be fairly obvious along with liver function tests that he is drinking heavily and they should be able to refer him for support.

If it’s reassuring, my GGT and liver function tests were completely normal again 4 weeks after I stopped drinking.

I am a binge drinker but can get through 3 bottles of vodka in 3 days. At my worst, I was bingeing every 10-14 days but for the past 2 years it’s been about once a month. At my worst, my GGT was 222.

It’s basically a marker of liver function so when very high, it does indicate liver damage. But important to know other things can elevate it (specificity) (some meds, non alcohol related liver disease, viruses) and its sensitivity as a marker for alcohol induced liver damage is quite low (around 30-50% of heavy drinkers will show raised levels).

That said, if your husband is a have drinker, it is likely that this is the cause of it. It should return to normal after about 4-6 weeks of abstinence so if it doesn’t, then they would need to look for other causes of liver damage.

Also important to also remember that it shouldn’t be considered in isolation. The best test for showing alcohol abuse is CDT but it’s not done routine in the NHS in the U.K. - it’s the one the DVLA use when considering giving people their licence back.

is your DH up for a conversation about it?

Thanks for the replies I don’t believe he’s honest with me as I think the levels have been raised for a while. He’s now got more worrying symptoms that are being investigated too. I don’t think he will give up and he is always very defensive when I raise the issue of his drinking.
