I’ve been a drinker for a long time and have decided to take a break. The last two nights I’ve not drunk, I’ve done to sleep at 10pm and slept like a log for about 9 hours. And woken up exhausted!! Why does this happen?!

I don’t know about the science, but I just wanted to say well done for getting started with stopping.

Great job, firstly.
Secondly, it's your body finally getting rest.

Keep at it, it'll get better.

This is normal when you're recovering from not having enough sleep - in my experience.

I didn't feel the benefits of the better sleep straight away when I gave up last year either.

It it worth it though.

Your body is healing itself. Sleep as much as you can.

It's normal. Your body has a lot of work to do to repair itself. You likely also aren't sleeping as deeply while this is happening, even if you appear to sleep for a long time. I will admit, it took me about 3 months to fully catch up and not feel exhausted all the time.

@Woozerbug well done on taking that first step!

I had terrible insomnia for years and in the rare nights I did sleep, I woke up looking and feeling worse.

Alcohol really messes with your brain’s neurotransmitters which really affects the sleep/wake cycle. Also why chronic abusers can have seizures when going cold turkey.

As others have said - stick with it, it will get better but may take time for your brain chemistry to right itself.

William Porter explains it well in Alcohol Explained if you are interested in the science begins it.

good luck
