Nightmares

I quit drinking at the beginning of this month. I’m really pleased with my decision. I was so fed up of being hungover every weekend.
Since I gave up I’ve been having lots of weird dreams which are often nightmares, and this is happening pretty much every night. I usually forget the content but I’m aware that I have had an upsetting dream. Is this normal? How long will this go on for?

@TENDTOprocrastinate well done on stopping and totally normal!

when you drink you are shutting off your brain so you don’t remember anything. This is a good sign of your brain getting back to normal!

I stopped drinking 8 years ago. Suddenly - went totally cold turkey after drinking upwards of 100 units of vodka every week. Dangerous, yes - but I did it. I had some horrible nightmares, when I actually got any sleep at all that is. I can still remember one vividly, being trapped in a vast warehouse full of eyeless zombies. Awful. However - the dreams stopped within a month or so along with all the other awful withdrawal symptoms. Congrats for ridding yourself of alcohol. You will feel wonderful in a few weeks.

I quit as I was aware my memory has, at times, been obliterated by it. I'm early 50's. Wine o'clock-I wish this had never become a 'thing'.

Completely normal. Alcohol disrupts REM sleep, which is where dreams (and lots of other healthy things like laying down memory) happen. So you are now getting loads more REM sleep and the dreams in early sobriety are crazy. But it does settle down after a while.
And well done on making the change!
