Heart rate lower after stopping?

I've been a heavy drinker for a long time (bottle of wine a day). I decided to stop about 10 days ago- increasing feeling that it couldn't carry on like this. Has been surprisingly easy in terms of physical urge, no withdrawals, and I already feel physically and mentally better. I'm planning to make this a permanent change.

One thing that has surprised me though is my resting heart rate. I have a Fitbit and as a drinker it was typically in the 80-85 per min. It's dropped steadily since I stopped and is now below 70. I'm sleeping better and not stressed so I'm not surprised it has dropped but is this level of change usual? Anyone else experienced similar?

I only really drink on high days and holidays, but I do notice my heart rate increases when I do drink. Normally my RHR is about 60bpm but after a two week holiday of a few drinks most days it will go up to 72 bpm.

Yes. It’s a very noticeable effect of not drinking (and drinking - when I was drinking there was a really obvious difference between my drinking and non drinking days).
And congratulations on your 10 days - good to hear you’re feeling the benefits

Thanks for the replies!

Yes I'm pleased with how it's going. One day at a time and all that. Have seen some quite impressive mood swings and evenings can seem a bit long but the sleep and general energy boost have been most welcome!

Yes. My blood pressure didn’t fall but my heart rate fell by around 15bpm.

I think that makes sense. Many people report less anxiety when they quit, so that would tally with a lower resting heart rate. I don't usually check my heart rate (my watch is too old to record it), but my blood pressure went back to normal.

Well done on stopping!
