Please could you give me a list of books? I quit for 4 days last week and found the book I read this naked mind helped with that but I need to listen to something every day to help I think. Stopped listening on Friday as planned to drink this weekend and that had been putting me off

The unexpected joy of being sober didn't really help for me

...and the Sober Awkward podcast helped though I prefer the earlier episodes with the female co host so start from episode 1.

Glorious Rock Bottom by Brony Gordon
The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley

Or the BBC documentary Rain in My Heart, which is a devastating reality check on what alcohol can do to you if you let it.

Listen to podcasts. I like One for the Road and Sober Awkward. There's also one called Hello Someday, which is American.

What sort of drinker are you? I think that makes a difference in terms of what will resonate with you. I thought the Sober Diaries was okay, for instance, but didn't really relate that much as I didn't feel like Clare Pooley and I were the same sort of drinker. I did like The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, but I did find the tone a bit annoying sometimes. We are the Luckiest and Push Off from Here are also good. Alcohol Explained if you like the more science side. Victoria Vanstone from Sober Awkward has just released a book called A Thousand Wasted Sundays.

Really though, I would do podcasts. It takes a bit to figure out what you like and what you click with and they are at least free, so you can just move on to something else if not a good fit for you.

The podcast Sober Stories was one I found most helpful. I listen on my commute to work. It's very relatable as it's just normal people telling their stories.

I read Annie Grace's This Naked Mind and haven't had a drink since. It's really good at breaking down what makes us crave alcohol and how, when you really examine it, it's just a poison that wrecks our body and brains and adds nothing of value to our life. Never say never, but I can't imagine ever drinking again after reading it.

Brighterdays123 · 05/02/2024 21:02

I read it and really thought it would work so I might listen to it again but I only did 4 days

I drink bottle of wine every night and I can't stop. I did 10days trying to do dry Jan and was hard and caved on day 10 when stressed but I kind of knew I wouldn't be able to do it so that didn't help maybe and then I binged worse than usual up until my 4 days off. Back to day one today

Thanks for this re podcasts, exactly what I need to do I think and yes rather than buying lots of books. Listening to the unexpected joy of being sober today just makes me want to drink!

There's a book recently released onto kindle called Beyond Booze which I am really enjoying.

Otherwise I am more into podcasts, you get such a breadth of stories and there are loads to choose from. My faves are Sober Powered, Sober Awkward, Sassy Sober Mum, but there really are loads.

I also set up a private sober insta where I follow different accounts which is something you might find helpful too.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/02/2024 16:22

If you want to stop, but can't, it might be time to think about getting some help.

I've been sober thanks to AA for over 10 years now. No big drama in my story, just heavy drinking which crept slowly up and that eventually I realised I couldn't stop even when I wanted to.

spartanrunnergirl · 06/02/2024 16:25

WILLIAM PORTER so good. Find him on podcasts too, totally changed my relationship with booze.

quichegoblin · 10/02/2024 22:22

Alan Carr- Easyway to control alcohol

GettingFree · 10/02/2024 22:22

I liked alcohol explained too, got the audiobook on audible

LouisaProvence · 01/03/2024 09:07

Alan Carr - Stop Drinking Now. Keep it by your bedside and you can dip in and out as necessary. Would also recommend booking in for one of Alan Carr’s face to face sessions (discounts on groupon) as the most effective intervention and the provide post session ‘top up’ sessions too and on going support if needed, given your current level of drinking.

Bit late to the thread but Craig Beck is fab, he has few different books. I found bim really relatable. Good luck Op.I am just over 7 weeks now and have started to feel the benefit for the last 2 weeks. I sleep so well, I am less moody/depressed mote focused at work and just calm.

change2022 · 15/03/2024 11:44

OP, I have a podcast called 90 Days Later. I cover all sorts of topics related to overdrinking, all the stuff I learned and wish I'd known. Based on what you posted I'd start with episode 4 'it's easier to not drink than to stop'. Happy to answer questions too if you want specific guidance

Brighterdays123 · 16/04/2024 21:55

Another day 1 for me today done woohoo never thought I'd get back to it. Coming back here to get some more ideas of what to listen to

Well done!

The book We are the Luckiest by Laura McKowen is amazing.

I first heard her speak about it on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast - you could start off with that, there are two episodes.

Verraten · 13/05/2024 15:19

I love 90 Days Later podcast with Anna Charles. Just recommended it on another thread. It's so down to earth.
