I'm really thinking of going T-total, alcohol doesn't agree with me at all, I get major headaches off just one glass, the taste gets worse everytime I give it another go, I get terrible acne, I normally have a drink on occasions like a special birthday, weddings, Christmas ect but thats only limited to 1 or 2, I've got kids to look after youngest being 1yr, i can get a babysitter but honestly I can't be bothered.

I'm not a borning fart although some people think I am because I "won't drink" sometimes 🙄. Is there anyone who's gone T-total? What benefit did it give you?, I know fine well I can do any advice and experience would be helpful thank you.

I no longer drink because, due to peri, it affected my sleep and I developed an allergy.
You have no need to explain to anyone, you just don’t drink anymore. It’s so much nicer sleeping well, no hangovers, no crushing tiredness the day after.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 01/01/2024 08:15

I gave up booze last January a bit like you it just doesn’t agree with me anymore. I drink Fevertree tonic water when out. It’s good to choose yourself a tipple. Honestly I just stopped . If anyone asks alchohol makes me really sleepy now and I have to tootle off to bed after one glass. Also the hangovers are horrendous and not worth it.

I’ve been teetotal for 3+ years.

Better sleep
No more wasted days
Less headaches and migraines
Better skin
Less anxiety
More money
Weight loss.
Less arthritis flare ups

So if there was a food that gave you a headache, acne, and you didn't like the taste - would you keep eating it? If someone wanted you to eat it at a special occasion, would you do it, knowing you were going to feel like crap afterwards?

I completely understand the social pressure to drink, esp in this country, but just suggesting you look at alcohol in a different way. You don't have to drink it. The majority of the world's population doesn't drink.

It sounds as if you are virtually tee-total anyway, and can legitimately say (as other posters have suggested) that you're allergic to it. I wouldn't have thought you'd see any major benefits because your alcohol consumption is already zero most weeks, but you certainly will see a benefit of not having a headache and acne.

I'm 51.Several of my friends have gone teetotal in the past year and I'm going that way too.It just doesn't bring me any benefits anymore and I'm a better person to be around sober. Read Catherine Gray or Annie Grace books and you won't look at alcohol the same again. It might mean leaving the pub or party early when everyone starts getting drunk and you can't face another tonic water but there is so much more to gain.My teens and their friends don't drink and have no interest in it although lots of their year group do.Doesn't seem to be the same pressure we had to start at that age from peers for them. The pressure to drink in my age group I expected has only been there from a couple of friends so I see them less or suggest morning dog walks instead.

@tribpot as I was writing this last night I had a glass of wine which tasted like vinegar I didn't drink the rest just poured it down the sink, so yep T-total it is, I have woke up with a twingy headache and a few spots off ONE/HALF glass 🥴.. I've always felt I had to drink because socially everyone else did and I didn't want to be that person who they would assume I was "boring" but those who have posted on this have given me a push, no is no!.

I don't sleep well after drinking so I'm guessing that's going to be my benefit as lately I've been sleeping like crap because if the odd few glasses over the festive period.

It really does sound like you're allergic to alcohol, doesn't it? It's adding zero benefit to your life, apart from a potential conversation with people saying you're boring for not drinking. But that's where the allergy card can be helpful to play, if anyone even does give you hassle about it (no-one ever has to me but I'm very open that I have a severe problem with alcohol, and also I couldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks about me not drinking!).

I like to say 'it is impossible to regret giving up alcohol' but that's particularly true in your case when you're deriving absolutely no enjoyment from it in the first place! Enjoy your alcohol-free 2024.

I'm t could also be the sulphites in many drinks. Plenty of people can't tolerate them. Even tonic water alone or lime and soda upsets some people. Life is too short to drink what you don't enjoy - go teetotal or find something that doesn't make you ill - I find decent gin and lemonade doesn't, whereas I feel pretty ropey after some wines and I'm gluten intolerant meaning most ale is out (just occasionally my local has gf real ale, it's a free house so beer varies a lot, he emails me if he's putting it on!)

Waitingfordoggo · 01/01/2024 13:01

I hardly ever drink these days. Probably last had a beer in maybe September or around then. Similar reasons to you (and related to perimenopause in my case). I’m not completely teetotal as I do sometimes still enjoy a cold beer if outside on a sunny day as long as I’m not working the following day. But as I am not very often outside on a sunny day without work the next day, I hardly drink. I used to binge drink in my 20s and 30s. I don’t miss it at all.

Nikki360 · 01/01/2024 19:24

I’m the same I’m nearly 48 and just stopped in September. I had two in October and I just felt horrible. Palpitations, irritable and just doesn’t seem to agree with me anymore. I really think perimenopause has a lot to do with it. I’m not missing it.

Greatdomestic · 02/01/2024 00:26

Hi op

I'm finding more and more people don't drink now.

I rarely drink alcohol, haven't for many years and don't miss it at all.

When I did drink more than a few I got the most horrible hangovers, took me days to recover. When I became menopausal, I just couldn't do it any more.

Most bars do a few decent mocktails, or AF beers now too.

DustyLee123 · 03/01/2024 10:27

I had a drink last night because I was bought it as a gift, and felt like I should. Half way through the glass my face was bright red and burning, so chucked it down the sink.
in future it’s being regifted immediately so I don’t feel any guilt.
