I am really proud to say that I have not had a drink for over 2 years. However, I can't deny that there is a void in my life. My social group still party in a way that I find it hard to join in. I am constantly battling an urge to fill my face with sugar - so I have just replaced one addiction with another.
Does anyone have any ideas for bringing fun and purpose into my life? My children are grown and flown. I am 60, fat and unfit - but able bodied. I think that I need a combination of excitement, achievement and a kick up the bum!

I am very very new to sobriety, so may not be much help!

But, how about something like an organised walking holiday where you go somewhere you've always wanted? I have a friend who did an organised trek to Everest basecamp when she was 50. She was not particularly active until she booked it but then started training by doing local hikes every weekend with a friend. It was great when she finally made it and she made new friends doing it and was so proud of herself. I'd love to do it, (or something similar but maybe closer to home), but I've still got little children at home so probably not the right time.

Wow, congratulations on 2 years sober!

I made a lot of friends over the past couple of years by going to a regular exercise class. It started as a way to get a bit fitter (I'm very unfit too) and now the social aspect is just as important at the exercise. I'm stronger and have more stamina than I did, as well as a new group of friends.

I have a few hobbies. I'm 42 and started learning to play the drums last year. I also am in a rock choir, am a brownie leader and go running. They might not be for you but find an interest

Thank you all for your replies. I do like the idea of training for something big. I seem to have spent too much time saying "No" recently. I will do some googling for expeditions. I would love to hear about any that you may know of.

What is something you've always wanted to do? When I got sober, I planned a walking holiday as it was something I always wanted to do but struggled to conceive of a holiday without lots of drinking (which isn't compatible with walking long distances). I leave in a few weeks. Training for it also gave me something to do with my time that I wasn't spending drinking.

What it sounds like though is that you need a new social circle. Have you joined any sober women's groups? Do you do AA? It's not for everyone, but there are women's meetings and you will likely meet other women in a similar place in life. What other things have you always wanted to do? I used to ride horses and it's something I've started to get back into. I also always wanted to learn how to do pottery. It's a bit out of my price range at the moment, but there's a local pottery class I'd eventually like to take.

It sounds like your 'thing' was drinking. But now you need to find out what your new 'thing' is and find a tribe.

Btw, the way, congrats on 2 years!
