DH sits up drinking every night until early hours. I would guess he drinks at least 20 units of beer, cider or occasionally wine every day. I go to bed on my own and watch TV on my own and do most of the household chores and work full time as well as having 3 DC. He has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and seems to be having more stomach issues and skin dryness. Does skip some meals. I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has been or is in a similar situation and can advise what happens if liver damage starts to occur and what the signs are? Also it’s very lonely when you don’t really drink!

Wouldn’t you be better off leaving him? This is no life for you or your DC if he just drinks constantly, it sound’s totally miserable

Liver inflammation, yes. More serious and permanent damage, it's possible. I was drinking more than that every day and I don't have any serious liver damage. But actually the risk is probably great for other GI issues. I have an issue with my pancreas (not diabetes) that I think was likely caused by drinking (though no evidence of that) and it can cause all sorts of issues with the stomach and bowels in terms of inflammation and malabsorption.

Ultimately, it's no way for either of you to live, but he has to want to change his life for the better. Have you talked to him about how worried you are? No one could have made me quit when I was drinking, but absolutely those few conversations with dh about how worried he was about me stuck in my head and over time, they did help lead me down a road of getting sober (but because I wanted to).
