How to cope when alcohol is going to be on offer

I’m off on a college trip with my class next Thursday. It’s our end of term trip thing to the city which is near us (we’re second years so it’s like a leavers thing). My classmates are bringing booze for the minibus ride, and apparently they’ll bring me some because I can’t purchase it (I’m 18 in a few months).

I’ve struggled with alcohol problems since year 11, don’t judge it’s too long of a story. I became religious nearly a year ago and I use that to cope with the urges. I would like one drink but im worried I won’t be able to say no, especially when there will be pressure

kind regards thanks for listening to my vent

I'd definitely not have one drink, it will be easier to say no and keep saying no.

You could try the 'I'm on antibiotics' line as a way to keep them at bay, that partly depends on how many times you might be socialising with them as you obviously can't keep saying that! But this sounds like a high pressure situation if you're all stuck in this minibus together, so probably worth it.

If you're determined not to drink and you're worried about pressure, say you have a tooth abscess and have been prescribed Metronidazole. You absolutely can't drink because it will make you throw up.

If it helps just say you're on medication. Its a really big achievement to recognise youve had issues with alcohol at such a young age. Buy yourself some nice stuff to drink or even no alcohol cans of beer? Although some believe that its best to avoid alcohol free 'alcohol' type drinks. You can do it, your friends will just get used to you not drinking. You dont need to give a reason if you dont want to, 'I don't drink' is enough. Enjoy how good you feel being 100% in control. Well done!

This will be difficult, but you've already done the difficult part of deciding not to drink on the minibus.
I'd recommend confiding in one person, even if you give them the antibiotics version. Or bet them £50 you won't drink and visualise the treat you can buy yourself with £50 when this single day is over.
That's all it is, a single day, made up of hours.
Good luck.
