Sleep tips

Anyone have tips for great sleep? I find it hard to get to sleep and do not get quality sleep. I had this even after a month of no drinking during the summer....

This time around I will take magnesium at dinner to see if that helps. I also work out already, my diet is okay (will improve it more...got slightly unhealthy during the christmas break). I guess my big thing is screens before bed. I know I need to stop that....I intend to.

Ugh, quality sleep can take months to return after quitting alcohol. It’s one of the last things to resolve.

Things that worked for me:

Bath before bed
Listening to meditation/relaxation you tube videos in bed
Lavender oil
Valerian root
No screens before bed

I got desperate for a while and used phenergan (anti histamine that is also used for insominia). However, found it made me feel really groggy in the morning so I only used it for really bad periods.

Exercise post lunchtime disturbed my sleep. So switched to morning.

Apparently kiwis and PREbiotics (not pro) are also meant to help but I’ve never tried them.

Many thanks. I exercise in the morning as well. Tried lavendar oil. I had trouble all through my pregnancy sleeping (third one) and now I wonder if it was bc I stopped drinking then!! It did not improve ever even after baby came out (for obvious reasons - feeding through the night) and then I began drinking again regularly when I stopped BF. So now, back to square one to see if stopping will help my sleep. Except this time I am going to try magnesium this evening.

I find anti histamine just makes you groggy in the morning anyway. I have only ever used it a like twice in the last 10 years (once when stung by a bee and once when I got an allergic reaction to a flower bulb).

Do you sleep well now @mintbiscuit? I think no screens might be key, as I have never tried that and I can see how the lights from it can confuse your body. I just find it so hard to stop!! I will allow myself a couple more nights w screens before bed (with stopping 30 mins before and read a book)....then I will move on to stopping 2 hours before bed to see if it helps.

Try podcasts or audio books rather than going completely cold turkey on electronics. I shut my eyes and listen to them and rarely make it to the end without falling asleep if its more than 20 mins long.
