Heart keeps feeling like it’s stopping as I begin to fall asleep after drinking most of the day

Hello everyone and merry Christmas!! Today we have had a lovely family day, my mum came for dinner and we spent most of the afternoon drinking alcohol, I usually don’t drink full sugar pop to mix with my vodka but the shop was closed and I had ran out of Pepsi max, so Dr Pepper it was today, I’d say in total Iv had maybe 8-10 drinks with eating inbetween, I paced myself and had a really lovely day with my mum and my partner, so we have all disappeared off to bed, my partner snoring away, and as I try to fall asleep Iv almost been asleep 4 times and each time I’m just about to fall asleep it feels as if my heart has stopped beating!! I take a huge gasp and jump as it’s very scary and then I can feel my heart again. Iv tried taking my pulse using my Apple Watch it’s in the 90’s at resting which I know is high but my heart rate is often high like that at resting, Iv tried googling and can’t find much, Iv tried checking my health app to see if my watch had picked anything up but it hasn’t but I don’t know if my watch continuously tracks my heart rate or if every so often it will check it and give me an average pulse rate.
So my question is, as this has not happened to me before, has anyone else ever had this? Is it just the alcohol wearing off? I don’t drink much usually maybe once or twice per month but Iv drank a couple of times per week in the lead up to Christmas and think maybe Iv over done it or something. Could I have just imagined it all and maybe I’m so tried from all the Christmas shenanigans that Iv just imagined it

I overdid it last week and had the same thing, 'skipped' heartbeats all through the night (it doesn't really skip a beat, just is a little late.) It's a very uncomfortable feeling, isn't it?

It's a well-known consequence of drinking alcohol and has a "fun" name Holiday Heart Syndrome

It should go as the alcohol leaves your system, but I'd give it a rest for a few days at least! And of course if it gets worse or carries on you should probably get some medical advice, but hopefully you will be all fine again tomorrow.

There’s a fair bit of caffeine in that too, especially if you’re not used to it.

So glad I’m not alone, yes it’s an awful feeling my dad died suddenly from a heart condition so Iv always been panicky about my heart and I just thought it was going to stop and perhaps with my jumping and taking a gasp I’d jumped it back into action. I’m glad to see your doing ok now and it was short lived. Will definitely be giving it a rest until New Year’s Eve and won’t drink as much then as I have today

It's anxiety OP I get this as well after alcohol, I'm just about to go into sleep then wake up with a gasp and sit up feeling like I was about to die (in my head I used to this if I hadn't pulled myself from sleep with a gasp I would have actually died), then heart goes mad (from panic) I am now alcohol free for that very reason and haven't had it in a long long time

If ever I overindulgence with food and alcohol my heart goes haywire all night long. Its horrible. Even a couple of drinks and a big meal can set it off. I'm not surprised you're having these symptoms. Don't worry OP - I'm sure it'll be back to normal in the morning.

Thank you all, I fell asleep eventually and woke up feeling fine and I’m alive and well today. Not had any alcohol today I’m saving myself for New Year’s Eve and I will be mixing vodka with a sugar free pop

Pepsi max always does that to me. I stopped drinking them:

Poisoning yourself this way is not a good idea when you have a family history of heart disease, so why not recognise that caffeine and alcohol is a toxic mix for you and treat your body with a bit more respect and kindness?

I always say treat the inner you like you would a beloved pet or child.

Why would you use poison?
