Thank you so much @Restlessinthenorth. Apparently they have a “professor” at my local D &A service who can help me.

I was drinking 2-3 bottles of wine a night until 18 months ago. Like you, OP, I’d always loved a drink but it had crept up to the point I couldn’t deny I had a problem.

I needed AA to help me stop and it has been an absolute lifeline. I haven’t had a single drink since I joined and the desire to drink has completely gone.

There are lots of online meetings now. Search on the AA website and go to a few. See what you think.

I should add I was also taking antidepressants and anxiety medication, and still do. My mental health has massively improved since I stopped drinking, though, and i can properly engage with other ways to help and care for myself - therapy, meditation, exercise - in a way I jut couldn’t when I was neck ing so much booze every day.

@TheWindow, so pleased for you. I tried AA years ago but like the idea of online meetings so will look into those. Can I ask what meds you’re on?

I’ve been on all the meds Grin (I laugh, but it’s true - I’ve at times been on quetiapine, venlafaxine, valproate, escitalopram, sertraline, lamotrigine, probably others Ive forgotten!) but currently taking fluoxetine and propropanol and they’re working nicely.

Definitely give AA another try - it works on all the route causes as well as strategies for the here and now plus support and love like I've never found before from anyone.

You so seem rather keen on finding quick fixes / medication to fix this for you so be prepared that the strongest recovery is something you have to be prepared to give everything to.

But if you do that, and put your sobriety above everything else then the freedom and life you will find beyond today will be incredible.

Woops 'root causes'

I have recently stopped drinking. I love the effect alcohol has on me, or, I should say I love the effect that first glass of wine has on me, but then of course I have to have more.

Setting up something to do in the evening has helped because after a few drinks I was just falling asleep in front of the tv.

So save MN until evening, get the sewing machine out ready to use, bake a cake..... something that means you shouldn't drink.

I agree with @Stircraazy about that thread, it's a good read.

There is absolutely hope. I was drinking 3 bottles of wine a night every night for a long time when I stopped.

I’m 18 months sober. I decided to stop and I did and I’ve never looked back.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 10/09/2024 22:46

Good luck OP.

Alcohol causes anxiety, so this may improve when you stop.

You may be at risk of withdrawal with the amount you drink x
