Hi,

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of declaring their drinking problem to the dvla. I have a family member recently discharged from hospital who was told they need to disclose their liver disease to the dvla. Looking into it more you have to declare the alcohol misuse and that carries losing the licence for 6/12 months.
Is it always that clear cut you will lose it or do they review each person? Do you have to pay for the medical exams you need to attend if they ask to you?
Thanks for any advice it’s all come about a bit unexpectedly, but would be great to hear anyone’s experience.
Thanks

I lost mine for 6 months due to alcohol misuse as reported by occ Heath doctor... it took another 4 months to get it back due to paperwork and bureaucracy. It also hiked up my car insurance as you have to declare it. Once the 6 months passed I had to have a medical (DVLA paid) before they would review reinstating. Then only reinstated for a year, followed by another medical.

Thank you for sharing, the forms have been sent off and I guess we will hear soon what happens next.

I had no idea about this. Does everyone who is receiving medical help for alcohol misuse have to declare it to the DVLA? Including AA.

I am interested to know more about this too. A relative of mine has been in a care home after being discharged from hospital where he was treated for Wernickes/ Korsokoff’s. He unfortunately has started drinking again and moved out of the care home. He has to go for a driving assessment soon because of his Korsokoff’s but don’t think that is with the DVLA. We are very worried that if they declare him fit to drive he will drive whilst drunk. Can we tell the DVLA ourselves about his drinking and previous alcohol abuse?

I'd never heard of this before I saw this thread.

I’ve only just found this thread again sorry but I just wanted to confirm that they did have their licence removed for a year once it was disclosed.
the bar is very low for them to remove the licences and has been very challenging to start the process with the evidence needed to get a new licence again.
the dvla said during many many phone calls to get this sorted that any medical intervention to stop drinking must be declared along with several conditions brought on from long term drinking.
been a challenging year my family member spent their first entire year sober to fingers crossed things on the up !
