Does anyone have any real experience of withdrawal? I'm cutting down from 1- 2 bottles of wine a day. Thanks

Yes headaches, night sweats, itchy skin and insomnia, irritability shaky uneasy feeling anxiety.

This was when I abstained for two weeks last year.

I currently drink about 1 bottle of wine a day and have the odd day off.

How do you plan on cutting down?
What time of day do you have your first drink?
How long have you been drinking regularly?

On the bright side, I was drinking at a similar level until last November, when I decided to quit, and did. I had perhaps a couple of nights of insomnia, but that was it. If you're worried, it might be an idea to talk to your GP before cutting down/stopping, because there can be side effects if you're physically dependant.

Good luck with it - I'm really enjoying being sober and have no plans to drink again.

I would suggest getting some help from your doctor, or going to Alcoholics Anonymous so you have time with other people and get support, in the mean time though, start cutting down.

I'm on day 15 from cutting down from a similar level.

I wouldn't say I had a withdrawal as such but the hangover from hell that I'd avoided for too long I had to face. The worst headache ever, quite sleepy but unable to sleep at night. A bit anxious for the first few days.

However I'm glad I did it. I'm sleeping better than I have in years, my mental health is better and I'm physically improving.

It's good to hear your positive outcomes.

I must admit that when I did stop drinking for 2 weeks after the initial insomnia the sleep I got thereafter was divine.

I am in the process of cutting down and on day one of a 4 day taper with the plan of stopping for 30 days. I am hoping I can then just go back to normal social drinking i.e a glass of wine with a meal or a cold beer on a summers day. The crux is really getting to the bottom of why I feel the need to drink every night.

I drank far too much for far too long before I kicked my husband out. I went cold Turkey and drank nothing for 2 weeks. I actually stank. Think it was toxins coming out. I was showering 3 times a day.
I also felt really hungry and thirsty. Apparently thirst Is common because you are getting most of your fluid from alcohol. Sugary juice.. as much as you want helps and then keep upping the water. I had a migraine or two but not for long. I am drinking again but very much weekend only and not to excess. I actually enjoy it more and I enjoy knowing I can unwind without feeling like shit the next day. I still think that i should really give up but I feel very much more in control. Definitely speak to someone. I went online and spoke to an aa rep daily they have been thru it and are fabulous and non judgemental. If you log on now one will always be available. They advised the sugary drinks. I honestly didnt think I could stop what I was doing but I did and I make sure I do things like drink lower strength alcohol. Only certain days and I drink plenty of water the days I do drink. I also make sure I go to bed at a decent hour.
Do you need to speak to your gp. People drink for a reason and maybe that reason could be replaced with counselling or mindfulness. Worth a try. Good luck xxx

Thank you for the replies :-) I don't know how to tag people.

I'm trying to cut down over 2 weeks and then a good few weeks of no alcohol.
I've always drunk a lot but barely had anything for 6 or so years through 3 pregnancies and lots of breastfeeding time.

It has been feeling out of control for the last 18 months or so I think.

I have primary school DC so my first drink is usually 4/4.30pm - 6-6.30 depending on their activities. My DH is in a similar position to me but has more days off than me and I think finds it easier
