I get extreme anxiety the day after I drink

I don’t drink to excess...maybe occasionally I over do it. The problem is, the next morning I seem to get an extreme reaction and experience acute anxiety. It will last all day, but disappears the following day.

Does anyone else experience this ? And if so have you found any solutions ?

The only thing that seems to alleviate it is to drink more which isn’t really an option

I get this too, especially when I’ve had gin which is why I no longer drink it and stick to rose wine most of the time. I don’t get bad hangovers though. It is a thing, I’ve heard it described as ‘beer fear’. Think it’s a combination of a hangover and a poor night’s sleep maybe.

donajimena · 21/05/2019 17:05

I've alleviated it by giving up drinking alcohol. Seriously. I couldn't take the 'hanxiety' any more.

VanillaSugarr · 21/05/2019 17:13

Alcohol makes me peevish. I’m going to have to give it up completely.

MummyDummyNow · 21/05/2019 17:23

The Fear. Beer Fear (or wine fear in my case) is a real thing, lots of my friends get it too, to a certain extent. Definitely got worse as I've got older.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/05/2019 17:24

I’m sorry, but the obvious solution is to give up alcohol - is this something you feel you could do, @recall?

princesskatethefirst · 21/05/2019 17:26

I get awful hangover anxiety, not every time but I do, it's a weird feeling of impending doom!! It's definitely made me cut back!

Drogosnextwife · 21/05/2019 17:29

Yes, depending on how much I have drank it can last up to a week. I hardly drink anymore because of it. I get terrible hangovers too, my body just doesn't cope well with alcohol.

I'm another one who no longer drinks because of this. It got really bad towards the end of my forties. It used to start in the early hours and go on all day. Awful.

feelingsinister · 21/05/2019 17:42

I'm very tearful for a couple of days after a big session. I don't drink very often but when I do I'm prepared for it now so just ride it out. Chocolate, crisps, crap films and naps.

poweroverme · 21/05/2019 17:45

Thank you Op @recall for putting this up. I hardly drink and when I do I feel this so badly. Recently had some drink this weekend while away and the fear and panicked is unreal especially as I don't drink much. Had it since I was about 24. Didn't know other felt this way

1Raconteur · 21/05/2019 17:49

I get this too, lack of decent sleep and dehydration will do it to me as well so it's no surprise that a night out drinking leaves me that way. No cure or solution, other than I know it's just the way I experience hangovers and I will be fine the next day.

greyspottedgoose · 21/05/2019 17:49

I get awful hangxiety, doesn't stop me though! I rarely drink to excess so know I'm being silly most of the time I get it

SallyWD · 21/05/2019 17:50

I've always had this. I feel very anxious and depressed the day after drinking even if I haven't drunk much. I rarely drink these days. It's just not worth it. It also disrupts my sleep.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/05/2019 17:52

Surely the one thing that would alleviate it is to drink less ?

recall · 21/05/2019 17:53

Gosh ...it’s a real thing then. It’s such a shame , I used to enjoy a good night out drinking with friends but the next day is just unbearable fear. I even tried diazepam once, and it didn’t touch it ☹️. I don’t get any other hangover symptoms, and actually I’d rather I did. I could happily cope with a headache and feeling rough and even foggy headed....but not the terrors.

Thank you for your replies...although it’s shitty fir all of us, at least we know we aren’t alone 👍

I gave up drinking at 22 as it had got progressively worse to the point where id be crying and dont know why.

Not drank at all since except half a prosecco at my wedding and dont miss it at all. I still go out on occasiom i just have soft drinks

Ohyesiam · 21/05/2019 17:55

What do you mean quitting is not an option op?

recall · 21/05/2019 18:25

No I didn’t mean that quitting is not an option. I meant that that the only thing to alleviate the anxiety the following day is to drink more alcohol...and that that is not an option

OP posts:
recall · 21/05/2019 18:27

At the moment ...I see quitting as the only option. Was just hoping that someone may have found a solution. I do enjoy going out drinking in pubs, and can go weeks in between, seems a shame that it’s always ruined by the terrors the following day

OP posts:
NoBaggyPants · 21/05/2019 18:31

You could still go out and stick to non alcoholic drinks.

Alcohol is a depressant. Depression and anxiety go hand in hand.

SunshineMuffin · 21/05/2019 18:34

Also have this. I notice it after a night out but am sitting here wondering if my anxiety heightens after a few wines with my meals. After heavier nights, I have huge anxiety and need multiple reassurances from OH that he's not annoyed with me. He's used to it now. It's not even that I'm blind drunk, just a few drinks out. I'll be keeping a check on my anxiety levels and when I've had a drink.

That was a interesting article.
I find gin depresses me more than any other alcohol.
Heard it called, over the years:
Boozers gloom
Beer fear
Sack cloth and ashes
Brewers droop - one for the penis owners obvs.

HopeClearwater · 21/05/2019 19:50

God. Just stop drinking

Another to add to the list is Mother's Ruin
