Shopping modern drinking as makes me ill

Hi All.
First of all let me just say that others have far worse issues with alcohol than I do and I realise this is piffling in the scheme of things.
Story is I like a few glasses of red wine but these days I can hardly drink anything without feeling terrible next day. For example went out for curry last night and had 3 Small glasses over course of evening. Today I feel shit and the worse thing is I knew this would happen. I feel so cross with myself as I have a day off work today and I feel like I've spoiled it.
Ideally I'd like to not drink at all as I hate feeling ill but is so tempting to have say 2 glasses after work but even this is too much for me and my delicate little body!
I'd be grateful for any words of wisdom or others experiences and some tips on giving up the little bit of booze I do drink but appears to be poisoning me.

Maybe try a different alcohol?

I can't drink wine, especially red wine the only thing that stuff is good for is cooking. I can't drink beer or larger either and only some spirits.

There are some lovely ciders about that don't feel like they've poisoned you after a couple 3s my limit though.

I stopped drinking because I could barely have a couple of glasses without feeling groggy the next morning - might be an age thing (I'm mod 40s). I stopped about 3 and a half years ago, have had the odd beer on a couple of occasion but basically nothing. I drink a lot more tea and probably eat too much chocolate instead! It helped that DH had already stopped for health reasons - he's started up again but whilst sometimes I do wish I could just have a glass of wine, and sometimes social things are a bit of a struggle (weddings!!), I am so so happy to never feel even slightly hungover.

As you get older you tolerate alcohol less well. I used to drink every day . I worked for an employer that couldn't make a coffee withut putting whiskey in it. We would drink at lunch, I would come home, have a bath and a glass and then go out with my mates on the lash. Rinse and repeat. One day a friend died of alcohol poisoning and I stopped. I can barely touch a drop now. One glass makes me feel like I'm on a Ferris Wheel. Is it worth checking your liver function?

You won't be drinking top-quality wine in a curry house. Do you feel that bad when you drink naice wine at home? I think the cheaper stuff is full of the chemicals that give you hangovers.

I find almost all wine turns me into a psycho, and it always has, so I drink lager or G&T and hardly ever get hangovers.

Spudulike3 · 11/02/2019 09:41

Hi MollysLips. I did wonder at first about wine quality and sulphites etc. Ive tried various types including beujolais type ones but still make me feel iffy. I think I just need to accept that something I used to enjoy is no longer for me. I just find it tricky to not have that first one.

Apparently it's the sulphites in the wine that give the hellish hangovers. There is a logo to look out for, I'll have a look and report back.

I either have to look for wine with the logo on or I know I can drink jack Daniels and Diet Coke.

Maybe try a different alcohol?

This is very poor advice!

The OP’s body is telling her it can’t cope with alcohol. It IS a poison you know! If her body can’t process it, why would you recommend a different way of ingesting it?

OnTheFrow · 15/02/2019 20:54

@HopeClearwater < apt name. Don't engage in conversation with me though, I'm pissed.

HopeClearwater · 15/02/2019 20:58

It’s your funeral Grin

gamerchick · 15/02/2019 20:59

I dont really give a toss if you think it's poor advice or not. Just pointing out what worked for me Wink

Mrbay · 15/02/2019 21:04

Do you drink the same about of water as you do alcohol?
I've noticed that if I alternate water and alcohol, the hang over is not so bad the next day.

OnTheFrow · 15/02/2019 21:12

@Mrbay yes I reckon this works but after a certain amount I always think it's a tenuous idea to ditch the water🤦🏻‍♀️

Slowknitter · 15/02/2019 21:19

I'm sceptical about the sulphites thing tbh. Loads of foods have sulphites in and they don't give people hangovers. I find alcohol is disagreeing with me more and more as I get older. Doesn't make much difference what type or quality. I don't really get hangovers, I just get flushed and a bit puffy in the face at the time and then sleep badly. I'm drinking less and less and might quit altogether.

Spudulike3 · 17/02/2019 18:56

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. As a few posters suggest I think I'm just going to have to try to give it up. On a positive note I have discovered an alcohol free wine that actually is lovely called Eins Zwei Zero that I got from Waitrose. I would def recommend.
